My DH and I have just been away for the first time since ds2 was born and felt it was a natural time for me to stop breastfeeding. He was only feeding from me once a day just before bed. He quite happily will drink cows milk from a cup anyway and his Nanny gave him a cup of milk on Saturday, which he drank most of and then slept right through the night. Last night I decided to try and give him a cup of milk again before bed which he wasn't happy with and was quite upset not gettig his breastfeed but again settled quite quickly and slept through the night.
Just wondered how long it will be before I feel comfortable in the boob area as I am feeling a bit lumpy and also lop sided as ds2 has only been feeding from the left side for some time!? Just wanted some reassurance really - I'm so proud of myself for feeding him myself for 20 months as didn't manage to do much more than 8 weeks mixed feeding with ds 1 (he was month prem and milk flow never really kicked in). I am also a little sad too as I have loved breastfeeding this time as I felt that it was something that I (and ds2) were really good at! Also ds2 will be my last baby!

Thanks for reading.

Just realised I can't type properly! Title should of course read: Just stopped breastfeeding my 20 month old!

webwoman I bet you do have mixed feelings My ds recently stopped breastfeeding too and I am still feeling a bit mixed up about it

I am glad that weaning has been a mostly gentle thing for you both and that you have enjoyed feeding him for 20 months. I would think if you are feeling lumpy I would try to express a little milk and also massage the tender areas in a warm shower or bath. If things don't improve please post again asking for help.

I have just stopped bf too! Didn't go quite as long as you though, ds 12.5 months. Boobs feeling very sore and everytime I pick ds up seems to get bumped - very tender. Hoping it won't last too long.
Bit sad about stopping but quite glad to have my body back, and I know dh is happy that my boobs are just his again.
Xx

Thanks ladies for your kind words of encouragement - we are now at day 6 of no breastfeeding and ds2 seems quite happy and is still sleeping through the night! We have a nice cuddle, story and a cup of milk before bed which he seems to be fine with. He pats my chest with a big smile and then drinks his cup of milk when I tell him that Mummy's Milk Bar is shut!

Looking forward eventually to buying some nice new bras! I don't feel too uncomfortable in the boob area now so hopefully it won't be too long before I am back to normal!

Hope everyone else who has just stopped breastfeeding is coping ok. I do still miss it though. Never thought I would feel that way.

Webwoman 05 firstly congrats for bf so long!do you mind me asking how long you bf from 1 side?- I decided to stop bf in hosp when lo was 3 weeks due to cellulitis in my breast and 3 breast abcesses but the other breast was fine and I was happy to bf from this breast alone and top up with formula if necessary but was told this was not possible, hosp wanted me to bf from both and after asking about ff and being told 'I think you'll regret it' that got my back up up so when another mw took one look at me in my teary state and said how do you feel about feeding? I snapped her hand off at the chance to ff -looking back I really can't see why I couldn't bf from one side - however certainly do not regret it!!!

iirc there is a hormone change too when you stop bf so that contributes to your feeling sad.

Glad you and your ds are happy. Well done for feeding him until he was happy to stop.
