Infant feeding

windy baby...

My baby is now 7 weeks old and has colic. He has been having Infacol before every feed for a few days and things seem to be improving so I am pleased about that.

It seems to be worse at night which I think may be due to him eating lazily and gulping lots of air because he is tired?? Anyway, once I have fed him, I wind him and he does his burp and possetts then I put him down again. About 2-5 mins later he will be grunting and writhing in his moses basket and I will get him out and start to wind him again...often ending up with me getting frustrated as no wind seems to be coming up after I have sat patting his back and rubbing for about 15 mins. Me winding him for ages is obviously disturbing my baby's sleep too but most of the time he is too tired to wake up and settles easily when put down again.

So here is my question - do you think that I should be picking him up and winding him if he is writhing but NOT crying because of wind? Or should I just ignore it and leave him to settle and if he cries, then wind him?

you could try it see if the writhing subsides without you intervening, he seems to have a lot of wind though, which method are you using breast or bottle?
as if it was breast it could be something you are eating or if it is bottle some of the experienced bottle feeders might have advice

Hi Jennylee

I am breastfeeding. I will look into what foods I should avoid but I don't eat or drink ANY caffiene apart from the odd bit of chocolate.

I was fine with chocolate, but thing is to try and find out what upsets your particular baby as not everything upsets all breastfed babies some like spices for instance other cannot bear it if you eat something spicy i think my ds hated if I ate onions, but others might not mind, also my ds hated if I wore perfume, and would not drink untill I washed it off on that screaming day. but I always drank tea, ate chocolate etc so see if you fnd a pattern to it instead of just cutting out a whole list of things that might not even affect your baby,

you need to be eating what you can when you can, so don't get too stressed just try and see if what you eat seems to affect him. i am glad infacol is helping, for me it worked too well and seemd to make my ds burp etc constantly and writhe, it seemed to be bringing up absolutely every bit of air out of him and he could not settle on it so I stopped using it after a day or so.
