Infant feeding

slow or fast teats for bf baby

Trying to get baby onto bottles so can have ebm at nursery. She is 6 m. Should I use slow, med or fast flow teats? I am not bothered about nipple confusion - she is past that now I think. Just want her to take to the bottle - what is best?

I always liked to use avent variflow teats as they give as much as the baby wants as fast as they want , that way I didn't have to worry about fast/slow teats.

I liked the variflow ones too.

Would it be better to give the EBM in a sippy cup?

Hmm, interesting question. I've never tried the variflow teats but they sound good. FWIW, my DS would only take to slow flow teats whilst he was b/f. Now I've gone over to formula totally he's gone up to medium ones. However I have heard the opposite, that it's better to give a fast flow teat so they get the milk easily.

Slow slow slow. Definitely. Even though the slow flow are marketed as 'newborn' and the fast flow as '6 months'. Breastfed babies are used to working for their milk, and there are lots of stories of breast refusal (La leche league call it a nursing strike) if babies get accustomed to faster flow teats. You could try a cup, which is the official 'next best'. Personally I decided on bottles (dd is 7months) cos the childminder isn't used to ebm and I didn't want any of my precious expressed milk to be wasted.

Thanks - since she is still refusing a bottle though - hard to tell what's best!!! LOL!

May try a cup but she is not that skilled and I too don't want to waste all that ebm I worked so hard to get!

I have a 5 and a half month old bf baby. He has the occasional bottle of EBM and we are still using a newborn bottle. Mainly because we use it so infrequently that I couldn't be bothered to get another . My reasoning was that I didn't want him to get used to fast (and easy) flow.

The other good thing when using variflo with ebm is that when you tilt the bottle up, it doesn't drip, so doesn't waste any of the precious ebm.
