Hello,

My DS is just 11 months and has up til now been breastfed. Over the past couple of weeks or so I have introduced the bottle and been feeding a bit and giving some formula. In the last week or bit he has had mainly bottles at night and in the morning, increasing to 7oz each time. He seems happy enough and is eating and sleeping well. However ... He poos constantly and they are explosive and occasionally mucousy.

Since weaning we have had issue with milk but I thought it had passed as he has tolerated all milk products for nearly 2 months now. Milk on cereal , cheese, yogurts, not a problem. Funny thing is, the milk used to constipate him. Now formula is having the opposite effect.

So what I want to ask is, has anyone had experience of this? But most important, what milk tk give DS? The doc bizarrely said to switch from formula to cows milk?!!! Not to bother with hydrolysed stuff and DS may refuse it at this late stage. Oatly milk was another ken mentioned but has very few calories/fat content.

Any advice gratefully recieved!

If your DS has been having cows milk without issues for a few months then I can see why you were told to move onto ordinary cows milk. If it's a cows milk protein intolerance, then maybe you could try goats milk instead?

Also, from 12 months you should drop the bottles as well and move to a cup instead. Your DS will only need around 300ml of cows (or goats!) milk daily.

Thanks for the reply. The odd thing is he did have big issues to begin with when weaning but never through the breastmilk. But maybe it is a quantity thing, giving 14oz of formula tips him over the edge in terms of cows milk. So that was my confusion but switching to cows milk. What else on the formula would cause the explosive and constant pooing?

The explosive and constant pooing could just be a weaning related thing - it can play havoc with their digestion until they get used to solids. 14oz formula plus breastfeeds plus solids might be a bit too much in terms of volume - if a lot goes in then I guess a lot has to come out!

I don't know what else in the formula could be responsible, and it could be unrelated to the formula possibly anyway.

Hi, thanks. I guess it is because they are mucousy and he has had issue with milk in the past I feel it may be the formula. I will reduce the volume. I did try this this morning and DS demanded more when the bottle was finished, and wouldn't except water.

If all else fails I will try a bit of the hydrolysed formula. I just wondered what other people in similar poSition use at 1 for milk?
