Infant feeding

One sore nipple

My left nipple is really sore (like razor blades coming out when I'm feeding). I only noticed today.

What could this be? I fed my son for a year and my daughter is now 9 months - I've never had this. I did get blocked milk ducts when feeding my son but that was quite different.

If it is any help, the left side is the less favoured side.

Could it be a milk blister/bleb?

I've had this a few times and the pain is just as you describe.

Check for a little white blister.

What's the treatment for it?

I am expressing right Now, was excruciating when I started but now merely painful.

Kellymom has a section on it but I cleared mine with a sterilised needle and then hand expressed.

You mean, popping it with a needle? I'll have a look and do that. Thanks!

Yep - be careful that you only take the top off the blister rather than actually make your nipple bleed though.

Okay so I've finished the expressing. I didn't find a blister but did find some skin that was halfway to being the skin on a milk bottle and halfway to being the skin you peel off when you have sunburn (gross, sorry). Could that be an already popped blister? The rest of my nipple is quite red and sore.

I know it sounds random but can you get an infected nipple?

Thanks mrsmagoo, I saw my GP this morning and he prescribed me some antibiotics.
