Ds was weighed on wed, hv told me he was abit over weight. I think its down to formula,i stopped bf when he was 9months and since then he's been having formula. He's 1 on friday. Hv told me to start giving him cows milk. I would like to know if i should carry on giving ds milk when he wants or whether i should limit it as he is over weight. Is formula more fattening than cows milk? Why is it not advised to give semi skimmed milk till there 5? any help would be great....

Goodness me, have some patience.

I wouldn't limit his milk. He's just one. Babies are often really fat, they slim up as they start running around more.

You're actually allowed to give semi-skimmed from 2, skimmed from 5. Not before then, as babies need the fat in the milk (yes, even if they're overweight), for brain development.

You musat not limit your babies milk. Formula aactually has less fat than cows milk. You cannot give semiskimmed until they are 2 and on a good diet, 5 if diet is limited or child is underweight. Until then they physically need the fat for their nutrition, no matter how 'overweight' they are. What makes her say he is opver weight anyway? I think most HV's are barking (to quote cod)

ok when i said limit the milk i ment give him a pint a day, which is what ive been told they NEED a day, as apose to whenever he wants a bottle as at the moments hes drinking a hell of alot more than that. And yes i know babys are chubby i dont really have any concerns on that i just dont want it to get out of hand. Dont worry im not about to put my ds on a diet or anything just want to have a little more knowledge on what my son needs. I only asked about the semi skimmed milk because my mum only ever gave my brother and i semi skimmed.

At the moment he has an 8oz bottle of milk when he wakes up, another 8ozs bottle before his nap then again for his next nap, then it takes him 2 bottles to get him to sleep then maybe one or two in the night. Thats like7 bottles in 24 hours at the most and 5 at the least. 40oz at least a day and 56 the most. Ive never sat down and worked out how much he actually has till now...no wonder hes gained loads of weight thats a ridiculas amount.

HVs often talk a lot of crap (MN HV's advice excepted). What did she mean by overweight? You did very well to breastfeed for nine months and you know, loads of babies slim right down once they start running about. Give him what you like when you like. It's not like you are filling him full of crap, is it? Babies need milk and they need fat.

Hes gone up a line on the chart she told me it was nothing to worry about. I know hes not unhealthy or anything...but when you hear under weight or over weight and its about your child you cant help but fret over it abit. I just started thinking and i do give him a hell of alot of milk. I also dont want him to have weight problems when hes older. So i thought id ask for some advise on here and the first post i gets really guite patronising and just made me feel stupid for even asking really. But thanks everyone you have helped and sorrell your right its not as if hes getting full of crap so ill just think of it that way from now on.

NQC wasn't being patronising - she was just wondering why you shouted for a reply a mere 11 minutes after first posting

The HV said there's nothing to worry about, so maybe there isn't! He's having a lot of milk, esp at night, though, so I expect she was just alerting you to it, so you could maybe think about other foods and drinks he could have - particularly at night when he wakes, to ensure he's getting his calories from a wide range of sources.

Does seem to me to be an awful lot of milk, whats his solids like, does he eat a lot?

If it were me I would wean him over to cows milk in the next few months (only if you want to) and gradually try and cut his milk intake down a little bit.

But I would wait 6 months as they change so much from 12 to 18 months IMO, they lose all the baby chubbiness and become little boys/girls. Once he's up and about he'll lose some of the weight for sure.

Also ignore the HV, I have come to the conclusion you cannot win with them, no matter if your child is big/small/fat/thin etc they will always make comments.
