Infant feeding

Newborn not feeding

DS is 4 days old and ebf.

He's not had too much of a problem feeding from day 1, but will sometimes take a while to latch.

My milk is starting to come in, and he just doesn't seen interested in feeding now. He'll make the feeding cues then when I put him to the breast he'll root a bit but then get fussy and cry. Or he'll just fall asleep.

I'm worried as he's lost 9% of birth weight, they're coming to weigh him again tomorrow and I feel like if just can't feed him he's lay here now dozing on me. I've changed him, were skin to skin.
In the night he was the same it took ages to get him on, and when he did he only fed for about 15 mins each breast, but even then I'm not convinced he was attached properly and getting enough.

Please help.

Call your midwife, don't wait for tomorrow.

It may be that he's getting the right amount of milk, it may be that he needs more, either way you need a real life person to help you.

Good luck. Day 4 can be tough x

Yes, do call your midwife and ask if someone can come and see you, either a mw or one of the infant feeding team.

Also, your area may have local peer supporters who do home visits, which might be useful if you get into further problems. Your hospital may have given you a number prior to DS's birth? Otherwise call the Breastfeeding Network number. And another option is that your local NCT should have a breastfeeding counsellor who will do a home visit. But, your first port of call is your midwife/ hospital where you had DS.

Can only echo the previous posters - call a midwife now, and arrange for a personal visit today.

This is quite urgent, and they will take it seriously.

Thanks everyone. I persevered and he did get a good half hour eventually. I was having a bit of a panic I think. I'm having a weepy day!

He's now on this next feed and latched pretty quickly and seems to be doing well.

He is having lots of wet and pooey nappies so I think he's ok.

That's good news! But don't hesitate to call the hospital if it drops back again. And even if things continue to go well, it might be worth getting to a drop-in just to double-check latch, etc.

(p.s. it's perfectly normal to have a weepy day or two around now! I remember wailing over trying to change DD's nappy at day 5)
