Infant feeding

5 week old - wind problem....(I think)

My 5 week old is bottle fed (now). He is, I think, quite a sucky baby. He is on Aptamil and feeds generally 3 - 4oz at 6am, (top up 2ozish) 7.30 - 8am), 10 - 10.30am, 2 - 2.30pm, 5.15 (2oz), 6.15 (2oz) and 10 - 10.30pm (3 -4 oz). He then wakes us at somewhere around 1.45 - 2am and then 5.45 - 6am for another 3 - 4oz.
I used Infacol for weeks 2 - 3 and wasn't sure if it was working so stopped it and tried gripe water from last week(they can have it from a month old whereas Infacol from birth). I've now stopped the gripe water (as it seems to have made no difference) and have gone back to Infacol which I appreciate takes a while to work anyway.
About 45 mins after each feed has begun, my ds starts to make intermittent coughing noises followed by a long cry, goes red in the face and then pulls his knees up and clenches his fist. No amount of winding, back rubbing etc will help him and he has to cry through it. Usually we don't have it with the middle of the night feed, but last night I was up with him from 2am - 4am -I gave him a teaspoon of gripe water and it seemed to calm him - then he went down after a cuddle and started to cry about 20 mins later when we went through the same process again (no gripe water again this time as you can only give 6 teaspoons in every 24 hours).
Sometimes I think he might be hungry still but I also wonder if I offered him more food that he might take it just to suck and relieve the wind? Thereby creating more of a problem for him.
I warm the bottles which I think might help. I have Avent bottles with colic/wind teats (no 1 teats) and have just bought some Doctor Browns (which I have used and seem to make no difference)
He's also had 2 sessions of cranial osteopathy and have another one next week - she said that his digestion seemed a bit unsettled.
He is not a "sicky" baby at all - I don't ever need to use a bib - but he does suck very strongly and fast.
So, any advice please?!

  1. Is it ok to use gripe water after the feed if you've used Infacol before the feed.
  2. Does it seem as though I'm feeding him enough? At the last weigh in he was 9lbs 4 oz
  3. Any other tips for windy baby?
4.I've started using a dummy for the bad times for him - no amount of cuddling will settle him, but the dummy calms him....does this give a baby more wind ??
Many thanks - hopefully someone out there has had similar experience
First time mum, so no previous experience myself !

How often is he going to the toilet?? (pooing).....

2 of my babies had problems with certain formula milks, and got very constipated....one so badly he had to have lactulose!!.....

i also found that carrying them upright in a sling thing between feeds brought up any wind that was present from the previous feed, which meant they were clear before starting another feed......

im not sure about gripe water/infacol as i never used either....but you seem to be feeding him plenty.....youd soon know if you werent!!

good luck

x

He's pooing in the afternoon around 3ish (quite regular !!) and then sometimes morning as well.
DOn't think it's constipation....but thanks for the advice - a good thought.

Hi,

I don't give formula but ebm and had similar problems, infacol worked and also putting him on an avent no 2 teat, he is a "hard sucker" too. My husband used to bounce him gently over his knee, with my husband sit/laying on the bed and baby over his legs applying just a little pressure to his tummy, or you can do it sitting up whichever is more comfortable...all I can say is he outgrew it by about 12 weeks!

We have the same problem with our 6 week old. It happens in the evening from 7pm almost to the minute. We are using Dr Browns, invacol, gripe water and constant winding all to no avail. She only seems to sleep on a sloped pillow

We are using Cow & Gate, however we did try SMA which is whey base, but all windy hell broke loose.

Somebody has said to me it could be a mild milk protein reaction creating acid. They said they moved to goats milk formula, but I have yet to find a newborn number 1 goats milk formula

No help I am afraid but I'd appreciate other views

the sma gold is whey based, but the sma white is curd based.......

my 2 babies who had the problems i described earlier were awful on the gold and better on the white......

it seems very odd, and i never found out why, since it seems backwards to me, as the white is meant to take longer to digest.....however, it was most definitely true, for whatever reason!!

........i would be interested if anyone knows why??

Ds had colic untill about 10 weks old, all we could do was give him gripe water and could spend up to an hour on and off winding him.
Other than that there is not a lot we could do, just gave him lots of cuddles, and when it got really bad put him in his pram and whent for a walk.

We had almost identical thing with DS (he's now 8 weeks old). He seemed to be hungry every 2 to 2.5 hours, and crying quite a bit.
She seemed to think we might be feeding him too often, she said no less than 3 hours between feeds at least, to let previous feed digest.
For colic we've found a combination of Dr Browns bottles and Colief (from chemist) seemed to help a lot. Both a bit more hassle to make up bottles - but worth it for relief from colic. (try using half dose of Coleif, it seemed to upset his tum to start with).
Also we're alternating feeds of SMA Gold and White which seems to help keep him full for longer.

Mayad, NANNY is a goats milk formula that is suitable from birth.

Raise the mattress in your crib/moses/cot by placing rolled towel under it, place rolled muslins either side of her under the sheet, this is safer than the pillow and can be used at night as she is raised but supported so cannot tip sideways. Remember to do this near the foot of the bed so she can't go under the covers if she wriggles.

Dibley30, was he windy before you introduced bottles?

Colief helps breakdown the lactose in milk and so start the digestion and can be very good.

Try MAM Ultivent teats, it could be he doesn't get a good seal on the avent teats, the MAM will fit.

Try cycling his legs to move the abdomen around and bring up hiding wind.

My little girl had colic and I used everything colief and infacol and gripe water when I was desperate! She had craniosacral therapy and that helped a bit. Colief is regarded as being the best but it is £10 a bottle so make sure you get it on prescription. His colic might only last a little while but it is exhausting so I have every sympathy for you and your little one. It will feel like the cloud has lifted when it does end but persevere beacuse a cuddle from his mum is the best you can offer. Good luck - try talking to your health visitor about changing milks - you never know.

Can anyone help - have 8 week old on similar feeding routine to dibley30 baby - but in the middle of the night around 2am my little one does not wake but writhes about sucking her dummy vigorously and passing windy pops! Her legs go violently up and down but she doesnt cry and has her eyes closed. The only time she opens her eyes or cries is when she loses the dummy through moving about. I have tried picking her up and winding her - but it all seems to be coming out of the other end! I have also tried gripe water but it doesnt really seem to make any difference. After about an hour she calms and settles off again.

  1. Do you think this is a formula issue? (It doesnt happen in the day time)
  2. Could this be trapped wind I am missing coming up in the day? (however babe is very good at bringing up wind and is sicky)
  3. She has a dummy when she is tired as is very sucky and ends up chewing fingers... could this build up so it amasses gas at night for her?(she does spit the dummy out after she has finished sucking in her sleep).
    4)Could it be constipation?

    Thanks very much x
