first time mum so please be gentle.

my little one is 16 days old and is bottle fed due to me not producing any colostrum or milk.

my partner and I are feeding her aptamil and in a bid to be organised so she isnt screaming for ages waiting for a feed we have been making up a bottle boiled water and leaving to cool then when she is ready mixing the formula in. We only make one boiled bottle of water up in advance after her last feed.

ive now read online that this is dangerous and I am now in a complete panic!Sad

my MIL said she used to make up mixed bottles in advance but I now realise guidelines have changed since her time.

what is a safe practical, organised way if any to make up bottles in advance or is it really make it on demand ?

I just want to get it right and safe.

You need to add the powder to boiling water, as it is this that kills the dangerous bacteria.

What I did with ds when mix feeding was put half cooled boiled water in seperate bottle in advance and seal it. Then, make up the other half with boiling water and formula in another bottle. Add the cooled boiled water. Perfect temp.

the problem, as you now know, is not the water needing to be boiled to kill germs in the water (not a problem in this country, the UK, under normal circs) but the presence of bacteria in the formula powder

Make up bottles in advance by boiling the kettle, making up per instructions here is the FSA guidance flash cool and store in the fridge (not in the fridge door though) for up to 24 hours (the guidance shows that 24 hours isn't ideal though)

COngratulations on the birth of your darling baby

as pedlars says, you can make it up with boiling water to kill off any bacteria and then store in the fridge. then just heat as needed.

or, you can use part boiling and part cooled water... .but you;ll need to practice to see how much of each you need..

for example if you'remaking up a 5oz bottle you could add your 5 scoops of powder, add 2oz boiling water and mix well, then add the remaining 3 oz of cold water

well just made a feed fresh for her and her screaming for 40 mins while I had to wait for the water to cool to then mix etc etc..not ideal at all !

from what I have read ( thank you for the link) am I right in thinking I am safe to knock up 6 bottles lets say first thing so boiling water, wait 30 mins mix formula in then straight into the fridge at the back and then warm up a bottle ( I have a small bottle warmer) as baby needs a bottle, but dont let the bottles in the fridge go past 24 hours and the sooner consumed the better?

just want to make sure I am understanding it correctly.

After you have knocked up the six bottles cool them fast, say in a bowl of ice water then fridge, the rest.of your plan is spot on x

I wouldn't bother waiting the full 30mins as it's quite likely the water will have cooled faster and be below 70C. Then you can cool them quickly, ice is good but agitate them so they cool evenly.

Congratulations on your baby :)

thank you everyone. I feel alot less panicky..im going to make a batch of 6 bottles now and let the boiled water cool for 15 mins before adding formula flash cold water then straight in fridge. I just want to make sure I am getting it right.

I honestly thought it was to make sure the water was ok only through having a chance look on here and reading some threads did I find out its the formula not the water..

We have a flask of boiled water and a sterilsed bottle of cooked water.

When she needs a bottle boiled water + formula to killed any bacteria, then topped up with cooled water to the desired temp.

You have to experiment a bit to find the right temp for your LO.

Cooled- not cooked.
