Infant feeding

Arching back and turning away

Has any one got any ideas what this could be? My little chap had a few problems feeding and would only feed in bed lay down. He's 4 months old now and was starting to feed great with me sat up. But the last few days he will turn his head and arch his back, so then I think he does want any more milk and sit him up. But then he starts rooting and looking like he wants more! So then we end up having to go back lay on the bed. Hmm

He will turn his head after feeding for about 5mins.

DS1 did a movement like this because of reflux - if you look up "reflux and arching back" you'll find info.

Another vote for reflux unfortunately.

Yes sounds like reflux. Docs can give your baby medicine my dd was on gaviscon.

Until then try only burping for 4 minutes in a circular motion (over burping can make it worse) and holding upright for 30 mins after feed- advice I found on Internet which helped my dd.

Please don't be too confident about pathologising what could be perfectly normal behaviour, and certainly within what is normal for a 4 mth old baby....they do sometimes turn away as if they have stopped feeding, and then change their minds and want to go back to a different position.

It could be reflux, of course. But babies arch their backs when they want to change their position or want to stop feeding. It doesn't have to be reflux. Hope you get some good real life support and investigation, OP :)

Sounds like reflux to me, is it on both sides? If not he just needs to get used to feeding from both sides again after developing a 'favourite' side.

Well I thought he had a bit of reflux before because he was arching his back and would bring up milk. I had to feed him lay down most of the time. But these last few weeks he's been really good feeding with me sat up and with no milk coming back up. He's still good with keeping the milk down but just arching his back and turning his head.
Could it be because of the heat? Because it's very warm here.

My four month old has become very fussy. Wants to look around and stops feeding but is very miffed if I put my boobs away.

Possibly they are just discovering and noticing more about the world?

It's hot, it's sweaty, feeding snuggled in is hotter and sweatier....feeding lying down is less so :)

And yes - discovering the world and wriggling and arching....all normal.

Yes - could be reflux, maybe. But I am surprised people seem so sure!

Spoke with my hv today and she saw my little chap feed. She thinks it probably the heat and might be teething. Thank you for replies. Little chap has fed a lot better this afternoon.

Ah great, sorry if suggesting reflux could have been to blame worried you unduly.
