What is going in with my 5.5 month old ebf baby?

He is my third. You'd think I would have this sussed by now. He is spoilt in that he has a cosleeper cot and easy access to the boob whenever he wants it to keep night time noise to a minimum for the other kids. So he has always fed every 2 hours through the night, occasional stretches of 5 hours.

But this past 2 nights he has been wriggly, twitchy, shattered but unable to sleep. He has literally wriggled and grumped his way through the night, wanting to latch on all the time, falling asleep instantly but not staying asleep more than 10 mins. His arms are constant,y searching for me and if I am not there he cries.

Is this a growth spurt? He is not 100% ready for solids though will be soon. I'd rather he could sit up better and he has only started reaching out for things with purpose.

His teeth are not far off but don't seem to be bothering him other than he likes to chew his fingers.

Other complicating factors could be the return of silent reflux with new symptoms which has until now been under control with ranitidine, or another food allergy/intolerance to my diet. Considering I am off dairy, wheat and soy and am careful about what I eat I can only think it might be preservatives in bacon or gf sausages.

Any ideas?

It could be a growth spurt to teething or something else. If you suspect teething have you tried ibuprofen?

I tried calpol last night but it didn't make much difference. The longest he slept was 2 hours, mostly 10-30 min spurts. He just can't seem to stay asleep. He had an intolerant looking nappy this afternoon so I'll have to look again at what I am eating I think.

Could be a growth spurt and/or developmental spurt? Both can lead to really unsettled sleep, especially if there's a lot of new brain development going on.

I'm hoping it's a bit of that,, but we also had a bad nappy yesterday which indicates an allergy to something I've eaten so I'm back to the drawing board with my diet.

Sometimes babies have a bad few days without much of a real explanation. Probably a growth spurt of some kind making him over tired. Another thing...personal question but are you fertile again yet? My daughter 9months is a grumpy madam and won't sleep for 2 days before I get my period and sometimes 1 night when I ovulate. I think the excess hormones are affecting her slightly. Just another possibility.
