Infant feeding

20 week old pulling back when breastfeeding

Hi, over the past few days my son has started to pull back quite hard (using his hands to push back from me too) whilst feeding. He seems happy to feed but I have to wrestle him to stop him pulling back, the latch slipping, and him bobbing on and off the nipple, and I'm getting sore now. Any ideas a) what this is? and b) what I could do to stop/help the situation. Many thanks for any advice.

Hi get hold of the brest feeding support person via your docter they have lots of advice, on these sorts of issues. I simply lifted his hand to stop him pushing off and I also changed position. I was also taught how to unlatch, say no, and then replace him. If he knows the feeding is going to stop, he will stop pushing off, it takes a few days to learn. but be aware that over the new year or so, depending on how long you breast feed...he will learn lots of new tricks, wait for the teeth!

Pop some Lansinoh on for the soreness which should help. DS did this for a while, shortly afterwards he started coming on and off to look around as everything else was far more exciting than feeding.

It is probably just a phase, hopefully a short one.

Thanks, will slap on the lansinoh and try the tips you've suggested proddy He is my third but I can't remember the others doing this, they did have their own little quirks along the way though! Actually this evening he was really unsettled and had red cheeks so I'm wondering if it may be the dreaded teeth bothering him. Or yes, just a 'phase'. Will see...
