Never ask a child IF they need the loo... moodlum

Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

No December Book of the Month, but spill the beans on books you're giving...

(12 Posts)
Page sorted now - should take you all to January books, not November. Let me know if any more problems.
For my dad:

Homicide by David Simon. Dad has already got all 5 seasons of The Wire, and Generation Kill isn't out yet, so I thought this would tide him over grin Have also received it for my birthday from DP, yay!

For DP:

DIY for Dummies grin (he did ask for something DIY-related)
The Diving Pool by Yoko Ogawa. DP loves Japanese literature and I've read some good reviews of this book, so hope he likes it.

For my nan:

A book I can't remember the title or author of, but which looks similar to the Catherine Cookson novels my nan loves (but has read all of).
The Light Years by Elizabeth Jane Howard. Thought she might like this as it's an interesting and well-written between-wars tale. Think I might have given it to her before though blush Oh well.

Thanks for the Child 44 recommendation, it looks great - have added to my wishlist. There's a very good film made about the same case, called Citizen X, starring Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland. Very depressing but grips hard.
OK got it now
CHild 44 is fantastic.

Giving DH Azincourt.

Tilly the link takes us to November not January.
Nice hardbacks for my DH: (from his Amazon wishlist)
A Case of Exploding Mangoes
The White Tiger
Child 44

For a chum:
- A book with pictures of luxury Spas (because it looked nice)
it kepps coming up as novembers books.
I had a look at the thrift book. The clothes bit was all about Fed-exing vintage Chanel from America. Hmmmm. But it is still quite a jolly book.
Hi Maria, January's selection is here - would love to have you...
Hi,

just wanted to ask when the selection for the january book would be? thought I'd participate this month (hoping that's ok?)

That big fat 'Ripley's - You won't believe it' book for kids 10 & 7. Bought it as a gift for another 8-year old and it nearly did not make it to the party!
Victoria Hislop's 'The Island' on CD for a friend doing several long drives over the holidays.
I'm not sure I trust India Knight on thrift - is she not fabulously successful?!

hiya tilly.. for my dad - cricket/sports fanatic - I've got provided you don't kiss me- 25 years with brian clough by duncan hamilton , the strange genius of ranjitsinhi by simon
wilde and shane warne biography by same bloke

for dh - I've got brethren and crusade by robyn young and azincourt by bernard cornwell (he knows its just comics with words but he loves bernard cornwell)...

am toying with buying the india knight thrift book for my sister

if anyone is tempted by tilly's choice for her mum, a massive vote for the letters between sisters by charlotte mosley - very readable and quite poignant in parts
We thought the festive season might be a little frantic already, so there won't be a Book of the Month for December.

Instead, would love to know what books you're thinking of giving (and those you'd like to find in your own stocking).

On my list to give:

For hedge-fund brother in law:
You Cannot Live as I Have Live and not End up Like This (Willie Donaldson). Biog of crazy cat, the title might raise a laugh

For all my godchildren: Halibut Jackson (David Lucas). Most sumptuously beautifully illustrated book ever, and gorgeous story about a shy boy.

For my mum: In Tearing Haste: Letters Between Duchess of Devonshire and Paddy Leigh Fermor. Fantastic fantasy land, so far from real life and full of mad adventure.

Bookclub will be back for January (the selection page will go up on December 9th and the chat night will be Tue 27 January 2009 - put it in your new diary now)

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
