Just finished Fall on Your Knees!!
What an amazing book-really looking forward to discussing in a few wks. Glad I joined this book club-not sure if I ever would have read it otherwise!

It's my first time reading it and I've gone through about 350 pages today blush (two train journeys is my main excuse.... let's draw a veil over everything that has not been done this evening....)

Looking forward to my first MN book cub discussion already.
Good - don't want to find myself staring at the door till dawn, wondering if I can hear creaking on the staircase.

Had forgotten quite how massive a book Fall on Your Knees is, lucky we've got a fair bit of time until our discussion night to get through it all... Am hugely enjoying re-reading it, I'd forgotten so many details.

Tilly, know what you mean about crime novels in darkness - but Dorothy Sayers at 3am is fine imho!
I was just remembering how harrowing it can be too - especially when the parts about the father. Not going to give anything away but can't imagine how I'll feel now that I have children of my own. But I can't wait to read it again.

On the blackwell/amazon switch that squonk brought up, it was really a better company to deal with I think. In fact, I noticed that they can deliver my copy of Fall on Your Knees in 2 days whereas amazon were quoting 6-10 days. But its just a suggestion really, and everyone free to borrow/swap/steal a copy from wherever.

I rather fancied all of April's books, they're fast becoming my summer holiday reading list. And I might save Dorothy Sayers for middle-of-night breastfeeding sessions - do we think murder mystery is a good idea at 3am?

As we all know that should have been Harriet Vane..

Thirded re Gaudy Night.. Didnt vote for it cos I've read it about 10 times, but Dorothy L Sayers is soo worth reading, particularly the books with Harriet Vine. The background is that DLS wrote a series of novels featuring Lord Peter Wimsey, and sort of fell for him in the process, so wrote in a strongminded crime novelist character for him to fall in love with.. They are wonderful books..
Read "fall on your knees" a few years ago and it still sticks in my memory - quite harrowing in parts....
The Nine Tailors ais a great read too and so atmospheric

Second that, NorthernLurker. Great book. Murder Must Advertise is pretty terrific too. I'm trying to be disciplined about not re-reading stuff at the moment but you can't beat a good murder mystery...

(sorry for hijack)

Yay! Had a copy already - but will have to get my skates on to finish it AND everything else I already have on the go by the bookclub date...
Hi all - just to say that you can buy it here - enjoy!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 28-Mar-08 20:48:38
Bought it. Why are we buying from Blackwells now, and not Amazon?

Is there a reason?
Okay, am jumping gun a little because I'm in France and I can't relax about the time difference (and because French keyboards are co,pletely different layout - its taken me blooming hours to do this much)... but safe to say that our winner for April, by a long margin, is Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie Macdonald.

There are no square brackets on this computer so I cant link to buy right now, but click on the link at the beginning of the thread to get to the book - might be good to order soon as poss as this one is quite a meaty chunker of a book.

The discussion night will be Tuesday 29th April 8-10pm, looking forward to it...
I have just voted - for fall on your knees, looks like a popular choice but even if it doesn't win I think I will order and read it anyway!!!
OMG- fall on your knees is just the most amazing book- it's classed as unsung???

Looks like Fall On Your Knees is in the lead, hotly pursued by Hallucinating Foucault. Keep voting...

Fall on Your Knees got RAVE reviews on the other thread.
hope everyone's ready for tonight's chat about The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - here's the link in case you haven't seen it.

We do need more votes - I offer up a half-eaten Bob and Builder marshmallow egg to the person who recruits the most converts...

Seriously, we would love everyone to bring a mate or tell another avid reader about the bookclub, let us know what you'd consider a suitable reward and we'll get working on it...

where are all the votes?
Thank you, I have just managed to work it - by opening my eyes! of course, thanks for the assistance though.
Very exciting as I think mine was a casting vote, at this stage anyway.

I'm sort of surprised this isn't more popular. I have wanted to join a book club for ages and an online one is perfect.

right at the bottom of the selectins page is a small vote here link, click on that and it will take you to the voting page
How do I get to the voting page, sorry to be thick, but I'm new and I just can't seem to be able to vote.

Have voted!

Interesting selection this month.
Don't think the book club things are for some reason. There are sometimes 'adverts' on the main site page.

Shouldn't this be a sticky?
We need more votes people!!! Although my fav looks like it is losing already <sob>

oh dear, I just looked - there are 5 votes, one for each of 5 books. I hope more voters come along!

PS. I bury my heart... I couldn't get through this, fell asleep
Love Medicine - probably the least engaging of Louise Erdrich's books. She's a star otherwise.
We have a chocolate box assortment of little known gems, especially selected for Easter, that have all been nominated by Mumsnetters. Check out the bigger-than-usual selection here - and pick your favourite to be our April Book of the Month...

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
