ds1 is 16m and loves having his bum out. since switching to cloth nappies- which he easily undoes, he spends a lot of time without a nappy on. i know when he needs to go so can ususally intervene in time- no probs there.
a sofa is being delivered today and i will of course make sure he has a nappy on then. if a plumber has to come round etc he is always covered up.
ds2 is 2months and he has a nappy on most of the time but i do 'air' his bum at least twice a day as i find if they dont get 'aired' their little winkies etc can get sore- mums of boys will know what i mean.
anyhoo, my mother tells me i should not let him be naked/nappiless as much as i do as i will have probs with him when he starts school?!? that is like 5 years away. wont he be dry and wearing pants by then?
am i wrong? i dont want to make him wierd or anything!

ignore your mum, you won't have any problems, toddlers love to be naked and theres nothing wrong with what your doing.

nah - my kids will get naked at any and every oppotunity they can and they are 6 and 4, but they know when it's appropriate (in our house) and when not (in Sainsburys).

Nothing wrong with it at all

As long as they are warm enough, no problem at all!
DS2 pooes so frequently (8 1/2mths) that it would be very churlish for me to try, but he has a good 10mins of naked bottom time before his bath (we have worked out that he is less likely to catch us out at this time)

You're not wrong, your mother is talking bollocks, they're BABIES fhs! I really 100% wouldn't worry about it. I wouldn't even cover them up for the plumber/sofa delivery person, all they care about it delivering/doing your plumbing and getting out!

Mums tend to be a bit old fashioned when it comes to naked children! Although I remember my younger sis used to have a "naked half-hour" every night before bed!!

My DS is 5 and still loves to be naked but hasn't done it in school as far as I am aware. They'll be fine and you are right it is good to let air at their bits.

sounds fine to me. Mine love taking their clothes off (3 and 5) - spent much of the summer running round the garden naked after being in the paddling pool.

ignore your mum.

Sounds like your Mum has issues more than you. The window cleaner came for his payment the other day and 5 yo DS and 2 yo DD insisted on standing at the top of the stairs naked while they watched DH pay him. They had just got out of the bath.

If they are happy and warm enough - no problems.

My eldest two (4.11 and 2.5) are always naked!! It's a nightmare getting them to put clothes on!! However that's only at home and we've never had any other problems... especially as dd has now started school, she's a bit more shy about who sees what. He'll be fine!

i think your mums wrong. however i once went to my friends house and her 7/8 year old was running round naked - that made me very uncomfortable. Also for the short time i was there the milkman also came -

i cover them up for delivery men as some wont come in if they see a naked child inside.
he is naked now, pushing his sit-on car round the lounge- he looks funny lol, sat naked in it making car noises!
he doesnt ever want to get naked anywhere else.

Mine spend most of their time naked - saves on washing

The only time mine are naked is in the bath.

It is FREEZING cold up here and our power bill is already through the roof at £86/month for a two bed flat - everything's electric and this is a rental so we can't change anything.

now we are in cloth it gives me more time to dry them as i dont have a tumbler so the radiators are always whacked right up! no fear of getting cold in this little sauna!

My three year old is gradually wearing more clothes having "done " naked. We're up to a t shirt and pants in winter now. I'm thinking by teenager he'll prob be wearing a wooly hat to dinner! in mid summer.

I insist my 3 and 5 year olds at least have pants/knickers on but a baby airing his bottom is good for them!!

BudaBeast I think you would have heard about it if he had been naked at school!!

My two (2.5 and 5.5) not only get naked at any opportunity they can, but they love dancing naked in front of people. The delivery man who has been a lot recently must think we are in some weird cult or something, judging by the look on his face.

My mum is similarly old-fashioned - she was even uncomfortable with me bf'ing in front of her.

Nothing wrong with naked at that age! DSs are a far bit older than that (8 and 6) and always wander about in just pants and a T-Shirt after school (have to wear pants or else DD tries to twist their willys off, she thinks it's hilarious)

As long as they are happy and not cold! Why worry life is too short.

Oh dear, I am a horrible old prude because naked bums on sofas and other surfaces makes me cringe!
Maybe because we had a horrible outbreak of threadworms a while ago, but I am concerned about botty germs. How very anal of me (geddit)

There is a point to pants wearing on sofas when they're being potty trained and still "learning" to wipe!!

Report
fizzbuzz · 29/11/2006 11:53

Nothing wrong with it at all, but BEWARE.
DS was running around in paddling pool when about 3 years old. From somewhere he got a green felt pen, and then carefully coloured in his WHOLE willie! I was too stunned to take any action, just sat there watching with mouth wide open.

My son is exactly the same, age and cloth nappies aswell. We have noticed that he has become more aware that he he does the weeing and where it comes from. now even points at his doodle. we can catch him in time to do his bussiness on the potty, he has been pooing on potty since 8months and wont poo anywhere else. you might be in for some good luck and he might be ready for potty training early.
