My DS is now 3 and was climbing before he could walk (my dd doesn't do this, maybe a boy thing). It was a nightmare, my mum gave him a little chair and he used to climb on it then onto something else! He didn't see,m to learn from his numerous (not serious thank god) falls either. All we could do was watch him like a hawk until he got some common sense. But now he is a great climber, runner, jumper etc and has great balance which gives him lots of confidence as he is a bit shy. So in the long run its probably a good thing, just hard work for a while. Good luck. J

My dd is a climber. She got from her chair onto a low table and then on to the window sill in the conservatory . She's 18 mths. All you can do is watch them but you can't all the time. A couple of times I've tried a shock tactic. i.e wobbling the chair or table but it doesn't last long.

My ds (2.3 years) has now learnt if he follows the cat carefully enough he can climb his way out of our garden, along a wall and onto the top of next door's shed. Aaargh! I can only watch in horror then talk him down like an FBI agent in the movies as nowhere he (and the cat) goes would take my weight!!

gosh, thats scary. dd climbed to the top of the stairs once, the gate was open and I had to be really calm and slow so she didn't think I was playing a game of chase and fall head first back down.

Not a boy thing!!

My dd is 3 and has progressed from climbing, which she's been doing from before she could walk, to jumping, she now jumps from one sofa to the other - about 3ft of the ground over a gap over about 3.5ft.

She also tightrope walks along the back of the sofa's although sometimes when she is tired she climbs and has the odd wobble.

But on the whole I am delighted with her physical progress she far outshines her peers. When we go to play parks she's up scramble nets and climbing walls with children a good few years older than her.

I think as long as you keep your eye on them it can do no harm. Although, obvioulsy following the cat - must be a bit more worrying, bought a smile to my face though....FBI

Keep a close eye. And attach any climbable furniture to the walls e.g. bookcases, dressers or anything really with shelves & drawers. This should keep them from falling on them if they decide to climb it. My DD was the first to discover that if you pull out drawers to different lengths you can climb them. DS perfers to climb bookcases. Thankfully now, at 2.4 DS is growing out of climbing the bookcases and sticking to ladders and attempting trees.

My DS has always been a climber too! As it is something he was obsessed about at 2.5 I abseiled him down a 50ft sea cliff in Devon (all harnessed up) and then got him to climb back up! He only made it a third of the way up before claiming to be ready for bed so was hauled up the rest. Now he regularly climbs outdoors and isn't so interested in climbing the furniture!(I'm a climber though so he's perfectly safe) Although he once climbed the outside of the banisters with only a sofa cushion under him .

thanks to all its reasuring its normal. its still terrifing though, when ds who only just learnt to walk at 13months climbs to places taller than his daddy 2 meters. but he has more stability because of this
