4.5 year old suddenly started biting his nails

Have you had any success in stopping this becoming an entrenched habit before it really starts? He has been biting for a couple of weeks now. Can't put the foul tasting stuff on his nails because he often plays with his baby sibling so it would transfer to them too easily...

The stuff that tastes horrible is like a clear nail varnish so wouldn't transfer to the baby once its dry. Its the only way I've found that discourages it along with keeping their nails short so there's nothing there to bite.
