Ds reads, I cry....minor miracle has happened

Ds has always struggled with speech and reading.

Speech is much better now, but his reading is way behing the rest of the class (by about 4 ORT levels, so significant, SENCO involved with extra support) He is 6.

He has broken up school for the summer, but we read each day .....8 weeks gap is way too much for him.

We were reading the Apple Tree farm books, Him doing the top bit, me doing the bottom bit. We've been reading this series for a while and it is like getting blood out of a stone, he stumbles and needs masses of support and encouragement.

Well this afternoon, it was if a switch was flicked. Not only did he read the top bits, but bugger me, he read the bottom bit as well.

At the end I had to go and have a little weep!

Oh well done, Master MB!

My middle one (9) really struggles with literacy and it's been a long hard slog, but this last month or so he's discovered reading for pleasure and it's lovely to see.

that's LOVELY mb, I'm sure your (and his) hard work will really pay off now, and you'll have given him something that will hopefully really open up his life a bit; I so remember loving sitting and reading as a kid and escaping into all those other worlds...hope he really enjoys it all!

my DS is only 3 so I am not at this stage but I've always been interested in whether there will be a moment when he can just 'do' it - and judging from your DS, there is!

Think you should get yourself a glass of something nice to celebrate

those Damascus moments make all the teeth-clenching hard work so worthwhile well done ds. Wonder if the time away from class-based reading has been the catalyst for something he was clearly poised to achieve...
