According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived,
because Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.
When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same.
We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.
We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.
After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark.
No one was able to reach us and no one minded.
We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all.
No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms.
We had friends we went outside and found them.
We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt.
We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones but there were no law suits.
We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents.
We played knock-and-run and were actually afraid of the owners catching us.
We walked to friend's homes.
We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.
We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law unheard of. They actually sided with the law.
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all

For those of you who aren't old enough, thought you might like to read about us.
This my friends, is surprisingly frightening and it might put a smile on your face:
The majority of students in universities today were born in 1983.They are called youth.
They have never heard of We are the World, We are the children, and the Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife
not Billy Joel. They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena or Belinda Carlisle.
For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam.
AIDS has existed since they were born.
CD's have existed since they were born.
Michael Jackson has always been white.
To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could be a god
of dance.
They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are Films from last year.
They can never imagine life before computers. They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, RedHand
Gang or the Famous Five.
They'll never have applied to be on Jim'll Fix It or Why Don't You.
They can't believe a black and white television ever existed and don't even know how to switch on a TV without a remote control.
And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone.

Ok, here goes....
I was born in 1983.
I love 60's, 70's, 80's and very up-to-date music alike.
I used to spend all day playing over the park and on bits of wasteland (which don't actually exist now), climbing trees and riding down big hills on my bike with no protection what so ever.
At the moment, still can't believe how much the world has evolved regarding computers, cd's and mobile phones.
Used to walk to school every day, including the rainy/windy/stormy ones.
Used to love skipping, football in the street with neighbours, curbsies etc. Also used to pretend we were superman/woman with our coats buttoned up just by the neck.
Was afraid of owners catching us when we played knock and run/hop the hedge/garden gnome.
So please don't tar us all with the same brush....

We never had proper spokey dokeys we just used an empty coke can shoved in the mud guard of the bike. And put the plastic clips they used to have on loves of bread on the spokes of our bike. Made a really good sound on my chopper bike

Got the a working Kipper. DD had kindly shoved a staple under it and it wouldnt go down.

Brute force soon sorted it tho

i was born in 1981 and remember all the things you've written about.i grew up with black sabbath and the a team and my ambition was to be one of the famous 5.my summers were spent outside playing or reading, no computers etc.i grew up with morals and respect for my elders.im now a mum to two and cant believe some of the things that the children have already got that are starting school with my son this year.they've got tv & dvd combis in their rooms, stereos, every new toy out there and god forbid they miss an episode on tv! hope and prey that somewhere along the line, my children will grow up with decency and respect and enjoy the simple things in life.

my first mobile phone was bought with my wages from my job when i left school! i didnt even have a tv in my room when i lived at home! probably just me but i think it's unsociable for kids to have tvs in their room when they're young.they should be spending time with the parents bonding and doing activities together.so many many people i know put their child in their room with the tv on just to get them out of the way, whats the point in having children if you want them out of the way? i think alot of families could benefit from abit more together time and doing activities together and really getting to know their children before they grow up becasue they do so quickly.i didnt have tv in my room, mobile etc, computer etc and i grew up understanding the value of things.money doesnt grow on trees and alot of children who get expensive items like these assume that it does and that they can have everyhting they want when they want it.they'll have a shock when they move out and get their own place and realise just how much things cost!

I wistfully agree with some of the things on thelist but not others like the bike helmets, car safety and childproof medicine caps. They've saved lives.

Also, I don't think the majority of students in University were born in 1983 at all. That bit needs updating a couple of years

Oooh - and I had a video game. Does no one remember "ping" or is it "pong"??? That tennis game with the white lines for bats?

my children dont go in a car unless they are strapped into a carseat/booster seat.i dont think its worth the risk.i think the difference between now and years ago is the fact that drivers dont seem to care anymore about other peoples lives or safety.they're in such a rush to get everywhere and break the speed limits and drive wrecklessly.when my parents were younger, people drove slower, cared more and respected other people's lives.i know there are us out there who dont do these things but for the safety of our children against the people that do, carseats are a must in my eyes.a chld cannot be replaced, and for what carseats cost, theres no excuse to be without one.
