pointing worries in 18 month old

DS is 18 months old and started pointing nicely at just over 12 months. He used to duly point to things if we asked him 'where's the ...'. Now it seems he can't be bothered to point or is somehow regressing and isn't able to. He definitely understands loads but tends to go and get something rather than point to it if we ask him, e.g. go and choose a story to read. Sometimes he will kind of index finger point but open and close the rest of his fingers at the same time- generally when really excited. Should I be worried in terms of autism etc? He genuinely seems too lazy to 'perform' and point for us (this goes along with his stubborn personality). Almost as if he's been there done that but I still do worry as he only has very few words so he's not communicating verbally yet either.

they learn a skill then move on and seemingly forget previous skill but it is there imbedded in his arsenal ... he likes getting things rather than pointing at them .. GREAT

he is understanding and he is responding

please stop worrying

a few words at 18 months is normal (DD didn't say her first till after 2, DS was gabbling in sentences at 18 months so really normal depends on the child)
