Phonics books- which ones?

Usborne are doing an offer of £15.99 for 12. In anyone's experience are these any good? Which ones would you recommend? And at what age do you suggest starting? The Usborne books say 3+. My LO is nearly 3 and a half. I have no idea when to start or what phonics even entails! I assume I read the story? He can only recognise a few letters at the moment!

You don't have to spend loads.

Watch Alphablocks. Watch mr thorne does phonics on YouTube. The library has phonics books.

Also try Oxford owl for free phonics e books.

Get magnetic letters and a board.

Book people often has Oxford reading tree books cheap. The newer sets are phonics, the older ones look and say.

We later moved onto Julia donaldsons songbirds, then onto reading chest, because it was costing a bomb in new books!

It's easier to teach phonics if you learned it yourself.

Songbirds set by Julia Donaldson are fantastic, as they start with a whole book just using 6 letter sounds, so kids can start to blend and read (rather than guess or memorise) much earlier and it seemed to spur my son on and appeal to his sense of logic.
