How to get 6 month old onto formula

Hi,

I've been exclusively breastfeeding my son (28 weeks) and am wanting to put him on formula now. I tried him on the bottle tonight and he just point blank refused it and got himself all worked up. After calming him down, my hubby tried but we had the same reaction. Ended up feeding him normally although he didn't take much.

I know that he can take a bottle reasonably happily as I went to work for 4 days and he took bottles no problem from my mum although these were expressed milk.

Any tips on how to make the transition to formula easier? I don't really want to be feeding him for much longer as going back to work in a few weeks properly and I'm not in the least bit interested in expressing at work etc.

Thanks

Have you tried mixing a little bit of formula with expressed milk, say 1oz formula with 5oz expressed milk, then slowly increase the amount of formula and decrease the amount of expressed milk? Smile

I didn't think of that! Will try it tomorrow. He's never been great at taking a bottle from hubby or me anyway but I'll need to persevere.

Thanks!

Temperature is also important. BM is surprisingly warm so try making sure what LO is given replicates that temperature

Good luck

I'd ask MNHQ to move this thread to the breast and bottle section. Also, ring the National Breastfeeding Helpline. A BFC will be able to talk to you about moving onto ff and making sure that Lo gets enough and you don't get mastitis Smile
