Head lag

I've a 12 week old DS. I'm a FTM. We were at the hospital on Friday night. Once baby was checked over, dr pulled DS up by his arms. She said he had too much head lag for his age and to take him to see GP.
LO has been holding head up okay, although still a bit wobbly. I wasn't concerned until she said this. I googled head lag, but all it says is that it is a sign of autism! Has anyone else had this experience?
I'm taking LO to docs on thurs, but can't help but worry
TIA

I have absolutely no advice, sorry, but hoping this bumps for someone more experienced.

I guess you are doing the right thing in getting it checked out but at 12 weeks surely there is a lot of variation between babies. Also why was he is hospital? If he was ill could tiredness meant he wasn't as strong on that occasion? And also, if you hadn't noticed yourself and thought his head control was ok then it can't be that bad, surely?

Obviously the above is my very non medical. Opinion and I haven't idea really, but try not to worry until you've seen your GP, all you can do is check it out and then take it from there.

It is definitely not a sign of autism.

It CAN be a sign of hypotonia..low muscle tone..which is not linked to autism and can often be benign.

Try not to worry too much.

Also, try not to google as you'll scare yourself, but if you must google check out month 5 on this page.... www.aboutkidshealth.ca/En/ResourceCentres/PregnancyBabies/Babies/PhysicalDevelopmentofBabies/Pages/Motor-Development-The-First-Six-Months.aspx

I googled "when should head lag disappear"

I also really wouldn't worry too much at 12 weeks. My DD does have low muscle.tone..her head was lagging badly at even over 1
.now her head and neck are just fine. If your LO is holding head up by himself at 12 weeks that sounds pretty good.

What Fanjo said.

Both my children have Autism and Hypermobility which is commonly present alongside Autism. Neither had head lag from the moment they were born. It was commented on often by professionals.

It's one slight delay. No baby does everything at exactly the right time. Getting babies checked when there is a sign of a slight delay is a good idea but the vast majority turn out to be absolutely fine.

Try not to worry. At 12 weeks ideally they should be able to hold their heads in line with their body when pulled to sit.
Hypotonia means low muscle tone. Head lag can be a sign of that. However there s a broad spectrum of 'normal' in terms of muscle tone. There are the babies that are super at holding their heads up and lookig around an those that are slightly more floppier. This is not a clinical problem unless it s more extreme (ie baby needing support in practically all positions ) and the head control doesn't improve at all.
Head control is also due to the experience of the baby- lots of tummy time, do it on your chest or across your lap, carry baby in tummy down position (superman Smile pose) try gets lots of frequent periods of it). Also try carrying baby more upright not always lying down on their back - so in upright positions. Where they have to hold their own head and work a bit more. Google tummy time positions.
Don't worry at 12 weeks there's plenty of time to improve.

Thanks everyone!

As a FTM, I just worry about what LO should be doingnd have nothing to compare things to.

Was worrying because of what doc @ hospital said. Think we'll be doing lots of tummy time to help to improve LO muscles.

I was told something similar at around the same age. Actually I think he was just having an off day/week and he was fine when I got him seen again.

You can do tummy time but they get a lot if this naturally when they start to roll. They get stuck in their fronts for ages Grin
