Another question: how to discipline a one year old?

This isn't really related to my other post but this seems to be the place to ask... I have a one year old, very active, walking, trying to climb etc. He can't talk but completely understands when you don't want him to do something, and does it. We are pretty laid-back about most stuff but there are two things we really feel we need him not to do 1) throwing food (this is about the only thing that really upsets my husband) and 2) throwing hard toys, e.g wooden bricks. What is the best approach for discipline at this age? If we say 'No, don't throw that,' he eyeballs us and throws it harder. Is it better to just ignore? This might work with the food, but the problem with throwing hard toys is that someone (usually me!) gets hurt. Being whacked with a brick on the ankle is no joke :)

They are learning boundaries at that age, so repetition, repetition, repetition....... praise good behaviour and be calm and business like with bad...

we used to take everything that was thrown and put away- no more playing with that until you can play with it calmly, type thing... if food got thrown, we just went back to mummy will hold the spoon.....

the thing is to notice, to be on top of it every time - good or bad - time intensive to start, but learning how to behave is..... and it pays dividends in the end....

Remove the things having said no...immediately. No warnings as that's a bit too much for a one year old to deal with....he throws his wooden toy, it is removed. He'll soon catch on.

Yup...repetition is the only thing that works. I have a 15 month old. We do the same thing - one simple instruction 'if you throw this i will gave to take it away' and the moment he throws it, i just take it away n remind him that the warning was given. Thats it! And trust me...now he doesnt even bother whining for that thing because he knows i wont give it back (well...not at that time)

It really works well and it really pays off.

Good luck Smile
