Worried about a one year olds very frequent poos...

Sorry, yukky subject!

Basically my DS poos anything up to six times a day and three / four is quite usual. They are often quite wet with quite a bit of undigested food visible but he doesn't seem in any distress when passing or afterwards - although he does occasionally seem bothered by his wind (which can be quite extreme at times!) although he also often just laughs at the noise! Recently he has started waking at 5:30am and doing a poo (or two, or three) and obviously can't go back to sleep after that. Other than that he has started to sleep much better recently (after being a really, really regular night waker) so I don't think he is in pain at night time.

We have quite recently switched from almost EBF to cows milk (three times a day), he eats lots of fruit and veg and is a really hungry baby who will eat pretty much anything offered (I know we are lucky in that respect). He also had reflux when he was little (he was seven weeks prem).

I'm guessing its to do with cows milk (maybe too much at bedtime causing the early waking?) and perhaps too much fruit and veg? But just wondered if maybe this isn't that normal and I should take him to GP.

Any thoughts very welcome!

My toddler was exactly the same at about that age and I came to the conclusion that that was just normal for him. The childminder always thought it was a bit strange though. It started getting better at about 18months and now at two he is down to two a day!

Thanks sarahmade. That's reassuring to hear! Did your LO wake up early to poo as well - just out of (tired) interest? Thanks!

Yes I think he went through a phase of that but it wasn't a long phase, well the pooing bit. He is sadly still a very early riser. Honestly I do feel for you...it's ridiculous isn't it? One time the childminder sent him home because he did five poos in the morning and she thought he was ill. He was totally fine, just having a particularly frequent morning. She was very happy when it all calmed down. Good luck, I hope it all gets better for you soon.

My ds is 2.6 and has always been, and remains the same. He too eats a rich and varied diet with plenty of fruit and veg. His cm has never known a child to poo this much but isn't worried and puts it down to his diet because he eats better than any of her other children. He can still have 4 or 5 poos some days, those it's more like 3 on a regular basis. I have no idea how we will potty train as they show no sign of solidifying and they show no discernable 'pattern'. He rarely does early morning poos any more, but certainly still was at 1.

Thanks sarahmade and matana. That's really helpful and I feel better! It is ridiculous some days and you can't help but wonder if something is up! Sorry I didn't reply earlier I completely forgot to check yesterday (too busy cleaning up poos :) x
