It's only for a few seconds - probably 5 seconds-ish, and it tends to happen in the night, in the bed next to me. I have a feeling my others did it too.

It's like he'll be breathing away, calmly asleep and then it will stop - ie he'll breathe out, and not breathe in for a few seconds. Like he's just forgotten to.

And then after a few seconds, say 5 or 10 (hard to quantify as I'm usually so sleepy) and maybe a small nudge from me, he will do a huge inhale of breath and everything is back to normal.

He is 6 and a half weeks old.
Should I be freaking out? It doesn't happen frequently - just now and again. I only remembered it during daylight hours yesterday, as he isn't a great sleeper so anything after dark kind of blurs into a long 'dream' iykwim.

He is healthy otherwise - normal weight, born at term etc etc.

Oh I think I've found an answer. Apparently it's called apnoea, and is really common in babies - thank goodness for that.

Co-sleeping or sleeping near you is the best remedy!

thanks Zuleika - I mentioned it to the rather belt-and-braces HV this morning, who actually said, flag it to the GP, in case it is something wortgh worrying about, and also, don't co sleep any more.

I told her about the reasearch about children regulating their breathing better when beside their mum and she said, yes, but we have to tell you not to co sleep in any situation, because it's government guidelines.

Sad I never knew co sleeping was 'discouraged'.
