Think full-fat is meant to be given until 5 years. lol at 'skinned'!!!

I thought that the 'guidance' was semi-skimmed from age 2.

I was alwys told to keep DD on full fat, but then again my DD is 11 now so the advice of recent years has probably changed. She drinks roughly 1 pint a day (combined in cereal, drinks etc). She will not eat cheese though and I keep getting told that she should have a matchbox size of cheese every day hence why I keep her on the full fat milk to try to get calcium into her. I'd be interested to know though as you've got me thinking whether I should switch to semi skimmed now.

I was always told that you could switch them to Semi-skimmed at 2 years old if they has a full and varied diet.
And I have just been told that it is still ok for me to give ds semi-skimmed even though his diet is quite limited because he is still getting enough from all food groups. (if that makes any sense!!)

louise35, from what I remember there is more calcium in semi-skimmed than there is in full-fat milk. (-:

DS (5) has hardly any milk it's a fight to even get him to put it on his breakfast. He does have lots of cheese and yoghurts though so I'm not too worried.

semi skimmed is okay from 2 and skimmed is okay from 5 but more nutients in full fat - depends on your kids' diets. If you feel they have full, varied diets and get enough calories I would go for semi. HTH. Smile

Thanks for that info Kathlean :o I did not realise that!! I think for the time being I'll keep DD on full fat as her diet is not really varied enough and its not for the want of trying!! She is the fussiest eater I have ever met. I try to make sure she has meals with a bit of each food group but she is so hard to feed. She'll eat about a quarter of the meal and then insist that she's full. She also suffers from epilepsy and ADHD and I have been told to make sure she gets plenty of calories but its easier said than done.

Probably for no good, sane reason we've kept ds1 on full fat milk because he's very skinny and doesn't drink milk - only has it in his cereal so we figure let's get the richest type in him! Ds2 has just turned 2 and we've switched to semi skimmed because he's the size of a small shed and drinks pints of the stuff every day..! Grin

I still buy full fat for our kids - 8 and 4 - but they don't drink it other than on cereal and are skinny things ! Never got around to changing over but would give them semiskimmed if we ran out.

if your kids don't have a weight problem and normally active why not keep them on the full fat? the fat helps the nutrients/vitamins be absorbed by the body as alot of vitamins are fat soluble.

bit of extra energy never hurt anybody unless they have to watch their weight

DS is 5 and drinks full fat milk. Whether it's optimal I think is a function of what else they eat & drink. Keeds need more fat and lipid soluble nutrients than adults, so if they don't eat much animal fat normally I'd keep on the FF.

However we do notice it fills them up, affecting their appetite for meals, so some of their FF milk is 50% water, which isn't quite the same as skimmed.

semi-skimmed in our house. DS only drinks the occasional 1/2 beaker so I can't be arsed buying his separately
