you need to heal the skin so he will stop licking - he's only licking to soothe a terrible feeling. (i did it for years myself as a kid, stopped almost overnight when i discovered carmex)

heal the skin, carmex is the best one for it. get a vanilla flavoured carmex, its not as strong.

I bought it in Waitrose BTW,but I think Boots sells it too....

We had EXACTLY this problem
Before Xmas with our 3 year old DD, this Weleda weather protection cream not only healed the chapped skin, it also provided a barrier from any more licking and as soon as it started to feel better, she stopped the licking! grin

He's probably licking because it feels dry and sore. The Vaseline makes a good barrier and both stops moisture leaving the skin, plus the air or outside irritants can't dry it out - kind of.
Once the dry/itchy feeling is gone he won't feel the need to lick, so there shouldn't be any need to put something on that tastes unpleasant.

Marmite???

Ds went through a phase of this and he looked like a neglected child. I smeared vaseline round his nose and mouth which helped.

Thanks for all the suggestions will try them. DS is nearly 3 and he licks the skin around his mouth especially the skin between his upper lip and his nose and was trying to think of something I could put on his skin that would taste bad (but not harm him) to stop him doing it. Will try the Vaseline and sudocream and see if that works.

Bepanthen is good for clearing up ds teething drool chapped bottom lip and Vaseline as a barrier.

sudocream , tastes horrid so he won't lick

Depends how old he is - and do you mean the skin around his mouth is red and sore, or just the lips?
Carmex heals chapped lips almost instantly, but stings a bit, so probably best for older kids.
When mine were little, they wouldn't let me put anything on, so I ised to sneakily put Vaseline on the red skin, either around the mouth or on the lips, when they were asleep. Works after a few days.

carmex it, at night.

it will heal very quickly.

He keeps licking round his mouth and it has become sore and chapped. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do to stop him doing this.

Thanks.
