DD aged 15 mths took her first steps out of the blue on Thursday. She had only been walking holding hands for the first time a day before that so came out of the blue! She did several sets of between 3 and 5 steps that day. Since then she hasn't walked on her own apart from the odd side step when standing alone. Is this normal? Was hoping she'd be walking properly ina few weeks or so- not so sure now!

My dd took her first steps around her first birthday ,walked for acouple of days then went back to crawling for about 2 weeks!!

Ithink she felt more in control crawling and faster too!

We didn't have any more for weeks! I know it feels frustrating but she will do some more soon!

Ds took his first unaided very wobbly steps at 14 months . Then went back to knee walking (He sort of shuffled along on his knees) until he was 15 months, then took a few more steps on his own a couple of times then stopped again. At this point he would walk a bit holding on to us as well but not much. Finally at 16 months he has started to walk on his feet more than his knees.

So all in all it took about 2 months from his first unaided steps to him actually regularly walking by himself. He still doesn't do it all the time.

I was getting really bored of waiting for him to start doing it regularly Grin but he got there in the end.

my ds took a few steps at 10 months, then he didn't walk again til his 1st birthday!!!
He obviously tried it and decided he didn't like it!
It will come - just give her time and encouragement!

DS2 took his first steps on his 1st birthday. He's now 14 mths and took 10 steps on the weekend but will only do it tottering from one (very encouraging) to another. DS1 was the same. I have heard of some who just stand up and walk but not with my 2! Smile

lol, my dd did this this week too!

she's 14 months and has been walking holding our hands for ages, hardly putting any weight on our fingers but as soon as i let go she drops to her knees and crawls.

we managed to coerce her in to taking a couple of steps into my arms this week and she thought that was great fun, and promptly started crawling back at dp again! that was 4 days ago and we convinced her to do it again yesterday but she really doesn't seem to see the point. she can get around our small house so well cruising and running after pushtoys that she just can't be bothered!

i wouldn't panic, i figure she'll do it when it gets warmer and she's outside and other kids are running around, my dp's mom says he was extremely cautious about walking too so it's obviously just a personality trait as opposed to a developmental one.

the key thing is weight bearing, as long as your dd can take steps thats the important thing, not whether she chooses to or not Wink

DD was like this, it just took a while for her to remember she could do it and then to get confident at it.

ds was like this - it took about 6 weeks from his first unaided steps till he was actually walking rather than just tottering for a couple of steps and then falling over. Some days he wouldn't take any steps, and he generally seemed much happier crawling during those weeks.

I once saw my ds walk the length of his sister's bedroom without a wobble when he didn't know I was watching from the doorway. He didn't walk again (to my knowledge!) for months after that and would go along on his knees. It was very frustrating but once he did get up there was no stopping him.

Seems like we're not alone then! Thanks for the reassurance. DD still hasn't taken any more than one step but will now walk happily holding onto one hand (or a finger even). I guess thats progress as a week ago she would not walk holding hands at all.

another one here - we had first couple of steps, then 2 weeks with nothing, then 4 or 5 steps, then nothing and finally about 6 weeks after the first steps she decided to walk more than crawl. It is V. frustrating !!
