Tanya - her methods work by allowing parents to back of a bit rather than getting heavy. Everyone is happier that way and it seems to work.

LOL Not sure i saw that one MT.

GSL, have been told to do that by the psych on my parenting course, and that we must not say please when we want them to do something.

i think a bit of both of their methods are good but also some that i don't like, for instance putting them in their room i don't like, and the naughty step but then again some of these methods work with children and some don't, luckily i don't have naughty children so i haven't had to use anything usually the tone of my voice and 1,2,3 works well with my kids, but i have often wondered what would happen if i got to 3 lol

Does anyone think House of TT is aimed at younger kids though , like ages 1-5 ??? Do you think it would work with ages 8, 6 and 3 ?

hmm that's interesting nutty! I really hate the holding the door shut thing... i don't know why it just makes me feel all horrible inside!

I LIKE tanya better... but that part of how she works puts me off, which is why i said supernanny! lol

I like both I have to say. There are bits of each that I think are fantastic but bits that I don't rate quite so much.

May have a chance of appearing on either show but cannot decide which one to persue.

hmmmm I think I would still tend to go for Supernanny.

I often wonder whether the good work that tanya does carries on once they're all at home...

It's very different behaving in a strange place iwth lots of people around than doing it in your own house with just mummy there!

nutcracker i would say based on your childrens ages i would say suppernanny would be good at dealing with that age group, she seems to handle older children better, and she lets them know their limits etc

nutcracker · 24/02/2006 20:23

Yeah i was wondering that too.

Only thing putting me off supernanny is that my house isn't great, parts of it are still in a state.

Supernanny - dh complains that its like having her in the house at times when i speak to dd - don't like Tanyas door holding either. Mind you the way she looks at the whole family is good.

Have to sit on the fence and say that I think both are saying roughly the same thing.
Tanya though seems to recognise more that a lot of the child's behaviour comes from the parents.
Of those techniques of theirs that I've used it's resulted in almost immediate results once I made the connection between behaviour and consequence and once ds had too.
I understand children need to know where the boudaries are, but supernanny seems to put a lot of emphasis on the children changing their behaviour and this seems a bit harsh and reminds of a few things in my own childhood which I always felt were unjust.

Suppose i could respond to both for now and then see who seems more interested etc.

Have to email back for the Tanya one and ring back monday for supernanny.

Tanya. I think the way she counsels the parents is fantastic, and gently guides them to making the connection between their own issues and their children's behaviour.

I too was uncomfortable about the door holding thing, preferred the naughty mat because i thought it was great that a child could learn self control like that. Plus the naughty mat worked with my dd. However, she upped the anti and started running off and i wasn't doing with that so resorted to holding the doo r- have only had to do it once and haven't had to threaten anything like it since!! though I do have a rope that i tie to the door handle for when she gets out of bed more than 3 times. have used that 3 times this week but not for quite a while before then. that was a technique from another book (toddler taming poss?)

Ok have emailed House of TT back so they will ring me now to discuss it further, and I will ring Supernanny team back on Monday.

I definitely prefer Tanya even though I don't like the door thing either (I tried it once, dd got hysterical and have never done it since).

Tanya is also a clinical psychologist and she deals with problems in a different way to Supernanny, who in my opinion, just tries to impose disciplinary measures without looking at the wider picture, or only at a very superficial level.

Dr Byron is also kind to parents, she doesn't berate them

oooohh, definitely Tanya Byron. Love her counselling sessions with the parents. Supernanny is good but there is no real analytical discussions between her and the parents. Sometimes I wonder if the parents can understand where they've gone wrong. Tanya does a good job in all areas.

Hmmmmm tbh I would quite willingly accept help from either right now, as although dd has calmed down slightly, ds seems to have taken up where she left off.

I think Tanya is brilliant (but, like everyone else, not the door-holding) and I think she and Supernanny do have similarities in their approach but I prefer how Tanya is with the children, she really seems to be on their level and she is wonderful in helping the parents through their problems.

I'm not a fan of Supernanny's great big wall charts and I think she's a bit too loud and enthusiastic with the children.

Report
goldstarlover · 24/02/2006 21:13

the other thing I like about supernanny is that she really does focus on ALL the children... whereas tanya sometimes seems to zone in on the most problematic one and the other/s get forgotten..

but that said they both seem to get results...

I like Tanya too...just believe she cares more about the kids.
