Hi

My ds will be 22 mnths come Xmas, and I can't think of anything to get him. He is really into cars and trains at the moment. Would like to get him something more educational but there doesn't seem to be much around for his age. Everything seems to be for 3 years+

Any ideas?

Thanks

We got ds1 a tea set (10 quid from ELC). Don't look for stuff packaged and advertised as educational - for his age the best educational things are those that he can play make believe games with and be creative. Things marketed as educational tend to be very prescriptive and you can only play with them in one or two ways. The best educational toys are ones they can use their imaginations with!

dd will be 23 mnths at Xmas and lots of stuff she is getting is for 3+.
AFAIK testing toys for under 3s is much more rigourous and expensive etc etc so lots of toy companies dont do it -am sure someone will tell me Im wrong but thats what Ive been told - Also depends on whether they still put things in their mouth or not and if it has small bits but then I reckon I can be the judge of that.
She is getting a wooden train set and some plan city toys and other bits and pieces like that. Teaset is a good idea too as is a brush and pan set

A garage for all his cars, Train set, play doh stuff. books, pushchair - My ds loved pushing a little pushchair at that age. A little kitchen and playfood. A trike, duplo lego.

A shopping till and play packets, an easel, biscuit cutters. they learn an awful lot by role play and copying what you do.

Thomas the Tank Engine puzzle - educational and fun. My nephew loved puzzles at this age.

I've bought this for ds3 who will be 16 months

Thomas Island of Sodor

Could you get him a basic wooden train track - a figure of 8 one or something with a few trains. I got this first of all for ds1 when he was about 18 months. He's 4.5 now and I've got 3 ds's and they all play with it (but now we have 2 massive baskets full of track, Thomas trains, bridges etc). It's the one thing that has been consistently played with in this house for 4yrs!

Get him some simple 18m+ jigsaws?

we also often get things which say 3+ for younger children. dd3 will be 20 months at christmas too. favourite toys for her, and for her sisters at this age, include:

little people toy garage (or any of that little people range)
tea sets
buggies and dolls (many of the little boys I know love pushing buggies)
doctor kit (they usually say 3+ but toddlers love them too)
shopping trolley and toy food
simple jigsaws. (for some of them, some won't do it at this age)
Duplo. excellent as it will last for years, they seem young for it at 20 months but they can just about use it and they can carry on playing with it til 5 or 6 at least. e.g Duplo farm, zoo, train set.

My DS will also be 20 months old in December and we are getting him: A wooden worktop as he loves doing DIY with Daddy, a whiz around garage and a shopping trolley
