Weird new trick - anyone else's baby do this?

DD (6 months) has just started doing something weird and I've never seen another baby do it before.

When she was able to get up on her hands and knees she started stretching 1 leg out to the side and lifting up the arm on the same side. Now she stretches both legs out (like she's standing) but with both hands on the floor. I said to dh that it looks like she's trying to copy the cat.

Is this what they normally do when learning to crawl/walk?

I have heard of it, though it isn't common. DD used to do that when she wantedd to stand up. Maybe she is trying to stand?

Perhaps it's just one of those things that they discover they can do and it amuses them, so they do it over and over again?

Yep cetainly sounds like she's copying the cat - good on her, try to video tape it - she'll be walking before you know it. I love their little idiosyncrasies!!

It certainly amuses us WigWamBam. Perhaps she does it because it makes us laugh.

I think she does everything differently. My mum's been a childminder for about 20 years and has never seen a baby pull herself across the floor with her arms.

We stand her up quite a lot but she always goes up on her toes so we just assumed she wasn't ready.

I think I'll get the video camera out tonight before she stops doing it!

Yeah my ddt does this, she is just 9 months. It looks like she would topple over, but is defintely strengthening her muscles by balancing as well as she does!

My dd pulled herself along the floor with her arms too - it then developed into a sort of commando crawl, and she never did crawl on her hands and knees, just went from dragging herself along to walking.

3 of my babies have 'commando'ed' across the floor in their time. My twins are doing it now!

Not sure if this is the same thing, but an 8 month old at mother and baby group I go to, pulls her whole body along with her hands. Its like her hands want to crawl - but not her legs!

Lol, 'commando style' is a great way to describe it!

Thanks everyone for your posts. She's not so strange after all
