What do you think? I think it sounds nice

  • do you think she'd spend her whole life saying "Tilda ~ not MATilda"?

I like it.

But not if your surname is Rice.

Matilda is nice too.

Yes she probably would spend her life saying "not MATilda".
Hard to get past the rice branding too - sorry.

A no from me.

It's too synonymous with the actress and the rice. And also it's not a very nice sound.

Basmati.

Not a good one, sorry.

Sorry but I don't really like Tilda or Matilda.

StrictlyKatty · 30/04/2010 12:51

Sorry but it's really not very nice. Matilda is ok...

But no-one immediately thinks rice when watching Tilda Swinton - everyone makes smartarse comments in Baby names on MN.

If you like it, use it - no name will survive a MN thread unscathed!

I think rice when watching Tilda Swinton but only because Tilda (rice) is a client of mine.

Other than that, nice name but would be open to confusion with Matilda I guess as that is more commonly used than just Tilda.

Rice. Sorry

Rice was my first thought as well, sorry!

Tilda Swinton is short for Mathilda so even with her, it's not a name in it's own right. Not saying you shouldn't use it for that reason, but you may well get most people thinking it's an abbreviation.

I have a Mathilda and she is known as Tilda or Tild or Tildy depending on who's talking to her and what she has done.

Nobody but nobody has ever said anything about rice to us or her.

Well I think it's gorgeous sunchild, so much so that I was going to choose that name too, but a friend suggested Amelia if we have a girl so we've settled on that, and we're going to shorten it to Millie. And ya, boo, sucks mners if you don't like my babys name cos I don't care!!!

8rubberduckies · 01/05/2010 22:32

Love it! May steal it for my nextborn!

Chalkpink · 01/05/2010 22:52

We have a Matilda, shortened to Tilda. Nobody has ever mentioned rice - if they have thought it they must have been too polite to mention it. I wouldn't let the rice connection put you off!

I alos have a Matilda, who is known as Tilda, we love it!! We have never had anyone comment on it... If you like it I'd say go for it

nooka · 02/05/2010 04:15

Rice to me too. Why wouldn't you call her Mathilda/Clotilda for her full name? Tilda just seems very truncated to me.

Report
violethill · 02/05/2010 09:23

It's not so much the 'rice' issue (because I agree, you don't automatically think rice when Tilda Swinton comes on the screen) - it's more that Tilda just sounds like an abbreviation. It doesn't sound like a full name.

Matilda is fine.

I think of Swinton when I hear this name. It is ok but agree it sounds too much like a nn for me.

ilovesprouts · 02/05/2010 09:28
