In my circles, yardie just means young person recently immigrated from Jamaica. Does not mean they are violent or scum.

The real original "Yardies" are Jamaian gang members (similar to the Japanese Yakuza or the Italian Mafia), chyna. I suspect the slang version you mention is new adoption.

Yardie gangs are notorious for their involvement in gun crime and the illegal drug trade, notably marijuana and crack cocaine where I originally come from. It's used as mostly a derogatory term or one that is meant to inspire "respect" i.e. fear.

DinahRod... where I'm from people use the word yardie to include those people you're talking about, but others as well. Just anyone young who recently moved from Jamaica. Neutral term. (Brixton)
