Emory and Mocara

What do you think?

Emory, after Emory Douglas, for a boy.

and

Mocara, which apparently is Scottish and means 'my friend', for a girl

I haven't heard of either of them before but somehow on reading them I would have put the genders the other way around.

janeiteisFedUp · 22/03/2010 21:29

Sorry but I dislike both of these.

Sorry, but both of these sound like made-up names to me. I would go back to the drawing board.

Er...no and no. I second AnnieBeansMum.

See the thread about made up names and DON'T do it!

ChynaDoll2006 · 22/03/2010 22:26

But they are not made up!

according to behindthename.com

EMORY Gender: Masculine Usage: English
Pronounced: EM-É™-ree Variant of EMERY

  • would say spelling with middle E is better and I've seen and heard far worse...if it's your cup of tea go for it.

Mocara sounds made up I'm afraid... what about just Kara/Cara?

If they are not made up, people will still assume they are made up.

Emory is a character on Chuggington. He is a passenger train.

I'm Scottish, lived in Scotland almost all my life, kids are gaelic speakers, and I have never, ever heard of Mocara. Weird name.

Mo = my in gaelic but Cara is not the word for friend.

Sounds made up, or at least very contrived ....

Are you sure you're spelling Mocara right?

I much prefer Emery with the e in the middle personally.

A friend of mine (Swedish with a French DH) has a daughter called Emory.

I had heard of it before that too. Never heard of Mocara...

I like Douglas

Mocara sounds like something. Morocco. Mecanno

I think of Dick Emery!

I just think of nail files and maracas. Or moca coffee.

ChynaDoll - they may not be made up, but they sound made up

Another Scottish mum here - never heard of Mocara in my life I'm afraid.

Emory looks like a badly spelled Americanised surnamey thing.

Mocara looks like you've been at the scrabble letters.

Report
dizzydixies · 23/03/2010 12:41

sorry, another scottish mum who has never heard of Mocara and not liking it that much either

how about just Cara or Morven even?

Emory - not keen on either, sorry

Both names are very odd and I wouldn't know the sex of either.

Conider that your child will probably want to fit in. I would choose a name with an obvious gender and I would choose something with a straightforward spelling.

ludog · 23/03/2010 13:02

Cara is actually the Irish word for friend but I have never heard the name Mocara. In fact Mocara would be incorrect grammatically as the possessive "mo" would change "cara" to "chara" so it would be Mochara.

Sorry, don't like either of these. They sound made up and/or spelt wrong! Mocara sounds like a type of coffee...

mathanxiety · 23/03/2010 20:02

Emory is a university somewhere in Georgia.
And what Ludog says about Mocara is right. I think the name Mochara Bhui comes up as a joke in one of Brian O Nuallain's (Flann O'Brien) books -- either The Poor Mouth or The Hard Life.

Emory/Emery is a legitimate name - I have a feeling it's from the Middle Ages. However, given the preponderance of girls' names like Emily and Emma, I think many people would mistakenly think it to be a girl's name.

I haven't heard of Mocara and I'm not especially keen, I'm afraid, sorry. I'd expect people to make stupid jokes about "Mocara won't start" etc. I would prefer something like Mairi.
