I love Ava. Not too keen on the others really, but in place of Madison, I'd suggest Addison

claraquack · 21/03/2010 23:55

Clara the best, of course. But check how pronounced. It's caused me problems my whole life.
I also like Lauren and Ava.

That's a long list!

I like Stella, Agnes (love it, most people hate it tho I should warn you), Ava (quick to write!), Clara.

Some of yr others are rather popular if you mind that (Olivia, Charlotte, Poppy, Abigail, Madison, Ella, Lauren - I know at least 3-4 of school-age children all of those).

Clary · 22/03/2010 00:13

You see even piscesmoon who is normally a woman of good taste isn't keen on Agnes

A former colleague, on hearing it was one of my proposed names for DS2 if a girl said "Good thing he was a boy then!".

She's quite rude tho

They would be known as Aggie-which can rhyme with quite a lot!

Posy- too fairy-flowery, what if she wants to play rugby?
Stella- in other languages I think it's pretty, for some reason it doesn't get beyond the Janet/Brenda image for me in English
Poppy- one of my secret likes...would never use it, because it's a bit too Ellie/Evie, but I do like it.
Charlotte- Timeless, classy, elegant. Lovely. Also its last huge growth period was about 15 years ago, so there aren't too many newborn Charlottes.
Ida- Ugly.
Abigail- OK, bit harsh sounding
Cora- I like Cara, but not this
Verity- icky. Don't like faith-hope-charity names
Agnes- Really ugly sounding
Lucinda- OK, bit pony club, but it's better than the dreadful Lucy at least
Tilly - OK
Madison- No, no and thrice no. Do NOT do it.
Ava- bleurgh. Faddy. Love Eve. Loathe Eva/Evie/Ava and any other permutations
Clara- Beautiful, just lovely
Helen- As Clara, well overdue for a revival, would definitely be near the top of my list.
Olivia- And there would be how many in each class?
Lucy- Dripping wet
Lorna- OK, prefer Laura
Ella- see Olivia comments
Dulcie- Janet/Brenda
Juliet- bit too icky, like Julia though
Lauren- see Madison
Ruby - see Poppy

Juliet is beautiful, with Dulcie or Posy as a mn.

I live Clara, Verity and Stella too.

Olivia and Charlotte (Lottie) nice if you don't mind popularity. Ruby the same.

I think Agnes is awful. I think the French pronounce it AnYay. Aggnusss is just terrible.

ellesabe · 22/03/2010 17:41

I like Verity the best

Ava - 2 million of them around - Eva/Ava/Evie blah blah
Clara - Love it. Very underused but works at all ages
Helen - too 70's and too plain

Lorna - don't like but can't say why

my lovely nan (RIP) was called Agnes Lilian and she absolutely hated Agnes, and couldn't understand why anyone would name a child with "an old womans name" and so her whole life she went by the name "Lil" and even when ill, would not respond to the doctors if they addressed her as Agnes.

Out of the names you've listed, i really like Charlotte, Abigail, Clara and Lucy - all pretty and classy names.
