something is stopping me using the name Amy - but what?

i really like it and want to use it, but there is something non complimentary lurking in my mind about it. am i right or being silly.

when i hear the name Amy my first thought is
'pretty girl' followed by something along the lines of a bit tarty.

can anyone reassure me either way!

We considered Amy, DH was really keen. Eastenders put me off as we already have a Ben and DH's name is Phil

thanks for the responses! i was just concerned because when dh and i named our first dd there wasn't a shadow of doubt in my mind about how much i loved her name.

I just find it a bit bland and meh.

It doesn't seem big enough somehow.

I felt the same about DD1's name. Both DH and I completely agreed and loved her name, still do.

Was much harder with DS and DD2. DS (Ben) was a compromise really. I wanted Finlay, he wanted Christopher. Both agreed Ben was quite nice, but I wanted Benjamin he wanted Benedict. We both agreed which ever version we chose he would be known as Ben so we just went with short version.

I like it, and I wouldn't let soap characters put you off, in a few years they will be gone and really, who cares? If you couldn't name a child after any character in a soap, we'd all be pretty stuck for names!

I know Amys of all kinds, from the sweet and lovely to the nasty and tarty. Sweet and lovely comes to mind first though. I love it.

For me it is similar to Ella in that it's quite nondescript and just seems a collection of letters that don't add up to much just there to be vaguely pretty-ish

I like Lucy very much at the mo

My friend called her baby daughter Aimee- the French spelling I think. I prefer Amy.

This is not going to be useful to you at all, but Amy is one of those names that I have always hated, but have no real reason to dislike it so strongly. I find it very dull, there just is not much 'power' behind it, if that makes sense - wet (as others have said).
Lucy is elegant and sweet (to me)
Matilda is strong
Amy is wet (and dull!)

It's a nice name - inoffensive (there seem to be a lot of Aimees around at the moment), but agree with others who say it's a bit wet/nothing.

Sort of like the female equivalent of Mark. Although not as 'bad' as Mark, since I wouldn't even describe that as a nice name - it really is a nothing name.

i am going to find out next thursday if this is a boy or girl i'm having, so maybe this will all be immaterial! although..i can't think of any boys name i'd like to use - arrgghh

Definitely doesn't have tarty connotations for me - I think it's old-fashioned (in a nice way) and pretty.

it's like Kate. It never, ever, ever goes away.

I mean it's nice. but i know Amys and Kates my age, which is not a bad thing. but just a tiny bit less exciting than a name which sounds fresher.

although my son has a dated name which is more popular in MY age group than his.
