Does anyone read the Times birth announcements?

There are some corking names there. Walter appeared yesterday- haven't seen that for a while.
Also the obituaries have some lovely old names- most people seem to be about 93 when they die.
(I obviously have far too much time on my hands)

My mother phones me up every few days to inform me of any particularly choice names. I don't have the heart to tell her I'm not really interested.

When i had my son (Wilfred) My husband was horrified cos i said i wanted a "death column name" until i explained i wanted an old fashioned name and he calmed down!

I love reading the Hatch, Match and Despatch! Mostly the telegraph, but days when I have both, the births are often in both papers. My DS and DD had their north announcements in the Telegraph, and I still have mine from 52 years ago!

I did a terribly boring spreadsheet thing when I had the dcs, finding the top 100 names from the previous five years and noting which had gone up so could be avoided. All in vain as dd's name rocketed out of nowhere and has now become terribly vogueish (sp?) which is really irritating.

Love em! There have been a couple of Maximillian's lately, which is terribly grand. One was a Maximillian Marmaduke which I thought was just fabulous . DH doesn't get the draw, but I love to read them.

The Telegraph put my daughter's birth announcement into the deaths column by mistake.

They were extremely apologetic, wanted to send flowers, etc, but I've never really been able to put it out of my mind. I know it's silly but I look at my daughter and remember what happened and it makes me feel awful foreboding for her. My DH was so upset by it he won't talk about it: even now, 11 years on.

I know our reaction was all hormones (me) and sleepless nights (both of us), though.

The Times's announcements often make me puke. "To Jeremy and Miranda (nee Ponsonby) a daughter, Aurelia, a sister to Hubert, Percival, Portia, Evangeline, Rupert, Marmaduke and Esmerelda."

Marmaduke that would take some bravery although there's something about it that appeals.

Gramercy, do you think it is OK for you to say that your eg of The Times makes you puke?
If you said,for example: The Sun announcements make me puke, and then gave a list of "chav" names you would be flamed.
Why do you clearly think that it is OK to be disgusted by "posh" names?
