Baby names

Can't decide... going round in circles!

Hi all, DH and I can't decide from the list below... haven't even begun to think about middle names. Want something traditional... both of us are teachers, so have been put off some names for life.

Here's the shortlist for baby Yates -

Daniel
Matthew
William
Jamie

no ground-breakers here... just can't decide.

Thanks x

I have a Daniel, and I still like it, but ppl will tell you it's A) over-used, B) boring, C) a sign of a handful-of-a-child (true in my case!).

To me William is much more over-used, and Jamie/Matthew are simply a bit dull.

Which name has the nicknames you find most tolerable? The nicknames will get used, whether you like it or not.

All good names in that everyone will know how to spell/say them correctly.

I love Daniel and Matthew.

William a nice name, Jamie OK but prefer James.

Matthew would be my least favourite - all the rest are nice solid names Agree with thinking about the nicknames - personally I prefer Danny to Will, for example.

Rather than comin up with a middle name, nothing to stop you combining them - James William is nice, as is Daniel James imo.

Oh,& don't feel you have to decide absolutely before the babe is born - dd's name changed after 2 hours as dh was quite clear that our first choice name wasn't right for her - he was quite right, our second choice is much more 'her'

I like Daniel and Jamie (but would go for James and just call him Jamie). Not keen on Matthew (bit boring). William ok but would call him Billy.

I like Daniel best, then William, then Matthew. I don't like Jamie (am a teacher too!). James, however, is lovely.

Daniel James?

I like William, not keen on Matthew (too common now) and not sure of Daniel.

William definitely - can shorten it to will, billy or liam if you want to.

I would have used this but my sister already has.

I think you should keep those names as a short list and wait to meet your DS. I have yet to call any of my DC the first choice name from our lists! It never seems to suit them iyswim...

Out of your list I like Daniel best. It was on our list for DS2. I like the nn Dan and Danny too.

Thanks guys... Daniel is our favourite. Am just fed up of everyone telling me how boring it is!!

If we did go with Daniel do you think it matters if my SIL current boyfriend is called Daniel too???

I have a Daniel and (as you'd expect!)love the name. Yes, it's popular but that's because it's so rich with possibility IMO. You will find Daniels of every race, class and creed. It's not a name that will ever pidgeon hole its owner. Plus it has two great nicknames. I do like your other choices as well- Wiliam is very nice, particularly- but if your baby seems to suit Daniel I would certainly recommend it as a cracking grand name.

i would go with daniel.

hey skegness do you actually live there!

My step-sis is married to a Daniel, I never even thought about it when naming my own DS Daniel . It's a common name; people can't expect a monopoly on it. Step-sis called her own son Alex, in the end.

I like Daniel - and surely it's not as common as say Thomas or Jack.

What about Michael?

I am a teacher, and have never met a nasty one.
Classic, but not overused.

RObert's quite a nice middle name to go with some your first names. My Nephew's name is Jamie although his birth certificate says James.
Strangely enough my other nephew is William but it's never shortened.

James Henry
James Robert
William Robert
Daniel James
Matthew James
James Matthew

Understand your pain re being a teacher and choosing a name. There will never be a Rory or Max in this house!

Like William or Bill/Will Yates a lot, it's my uncle's name and he does 'something important' and pressurised in the Far East but is a very laid back individual with a lot of wit and charm, so have always had a fondness for this name.

Actually I like all your choices but think with the hard consonant 't' sound in Yates, Matt Yates, as it would get shortened to, is a bit harsh sounding and that the other three sound more melodious and roll of the tongue better.

In order:
William
Daniel
Jamie
Matthew

Similar here working in a Nursery school. Never a Max here either!

DH is a Jamie - Just jamie.. not James though

Matthew is our boys choice Lovely name and also DH's Middle name.

Like all the names but personally after Matthew it would be William.
