Am I mad to think of Marina?

What do you think of Marina as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I've always loved this name - since I read a Jilly Cooper book as a teenager - but have searched on Mumsnet and discover it's the name of a contraceptive coil! I thought the associations of being a boat harbour were bad enough...

... so much so that I've not even mentioned it to DP yet

Comments please

I think it's lovely. Also, the coil is Mirena, isn't it? I definitely don't associate the two!

I LOVE, LOVE, the name Marina. Did mention it to DH once but he scoffed at the suggestion. Our DD's name is I supposed a shorter version of it (not intentionally, but I've just realised just now!).

Go for it!! I think it's Merina coil, no?

Wasn't the peroxide blonde bit on the side in last of the Summer Wine called Marina? Makes me think of an aged lady Whitney dressed as Britney. In a boat. Sorry.

Yes, Howard's bit of stuff!! Also wasn't there a car called Morris Marina? Only came in beige.......

I like the sound of the name, just seems to have a lot of unwelcome connotations. Is there another name that sounds similar?

Its a lovely name, and not the name of a coil.

Thank you all, and apologies for not doing my coil research properly before posting ....

Spurred on by the enthusiasm in this thread, I mentioned it to DP who reminded me that living on the South Coast will give the name all sorts of unsavoury and silly connotations.

Perhaps I'm forgetting the cruelty of kids' taunts, but he seems to think out all the possibilities for mocking - apparently "We're all going down the Marina" marks her out as a woman with loose morals - and she's not even born yet - or even necessarily a girl!

The quest continues....

Was going to say exactly the same as juneybean then thought oops revealing my age - oh what the hell - yes I wanted to be aqua marina. Isn't there also a royal called Marina? Always thought of it as a bit posh, as well as watery.

Well in the same sort of 1950s60s posh bird names - I like Pamela (but hate Pam), like Lydia, don't like Belinda.

Or howabout Julia - classic and v nice.

nnooooooooooooo!!
it's beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My best friend is called Marina and it's brilliant and so is she. Her mum said the hospital where she gave birth was by the Marina and thought it would make a lovely name. It means 'of the sea' which i think is so pretty. There's a princess Marina too

I like Marina. One of our au pairs when we were little was called Marina & she was lovely. My parents also bought a new Morris Marina It was so crap they sent it back within a week.

If you like it, go for it.
