I love dd2's name - and importantly so does dh - but I just keep on thinking I should have pushed harder to call her this other name especially as my friend said her dh hated it but she worked on him...........Tell me I'm stupid. PLease!

dd2 has a lovely simple elegant name and this other one is longer, more girly and wouldn't work as well with our long surname but I keep hankering!

I do know this is Stupid by the way especially as dd2 is just beautiful and I'd never change her name.

I feel your pain. DH and I had agreed names for dc3 and when she was born I immediately called her this name and told the midwives.

Cue DH half an hour later saying I dont want her to have this name I want her to be called completely new name. I was too high on gas and air knackered from childbirth to argue and she is called new name with agreed name as middle name.

She suits it and it is very pretty but I secretly prefer her middle name.

But you had your chance and didn't use it. I really don't understand "name ownership".

I wish I had called my YS something else... nothing wrong with his name but I prefer another name. But it's not horrid and it suits him better than my prefered option. And so I don't have to use it often I have given him a nickname.

My niece is called Matilda, they call her Tilly. My Uncle hates it - says she'll be called silly Tilly on her first day at school...

Its not ownership- of course I don't expect her not to use it. Its plain old envy!

Actually I don't like Tilly at all- I'm talking myself round now.

Mathilda is a lovely name.

My dd2 is called by her middle name all the time. I like it more than her 1st name but it isn't very adult sounding so she has a more sensible 1st name.

My best friend has just had a baby and he is called excatly the same as my ds5.I think it is lovely and so does ds5!

Erm, I think it's one of those names that's had it's day in terms or cutting edge cuteness.

I'm sure your DD name is much more lovely.

If that helps any! If it's anymore consolation I also went with DH wishes, but secretly prefer her middle name.

Thanks Tina! I LOVE dd2s name and crucially it does go with our surname which Matilda (and definitely not Tilly) wouldn't.
Also I think i would be one of those "Its not Tilly, Its Matilda! mums!

What did you call your dd?

Report
fruitstick · 08/01/2010 22:37

I like the name Matilda but irrationally feel that the chances of her growing up to be brattish are higher.

I'm sure that your DD is a much lovelier girl.

I have 2 DSs and probably won't have any more - but woe betide any of my friends who think they can use my girl's name .

Difficult for us to tell you the name you chose was much nicer than Matilda when we don't know what name you chose!

Matilda is so passe......so many of them around.... too popular for words... Matilda schmatilda.... tilly schmilly..... and Matilda did tell such terrible lies.... waltzing Matilda.....

Now, for all that comfort, PLEASE tell us what you did call your DD!!
