What do we think ladies??

Am in a dilemma because always said my daughter would be Valeria (DH is Spanish, and Valerie was my nan, who raised me). Now, one of dh's cousins, knowing it was our name, as decided her DD, due in October, will be Valeria. .

This shouldn't annoy me as much as it has, or make me rethink it, but there's something about our Valeria now not being the only one in the family...

So, another option is Valentina, which we love. Still gets to be Val for short.

Opinions please? Should we stick with Valeria, Valerie or go for Valentina for originality?

Valentina is gorgeous, nicer even than Valeria imo. Boo to your DH's cousin!

Valentina is gorgeous- so much nicer imo. Valerian is a herb used in sleeping medications!

Valerie is nice, and Valentina is lovely

Let the cousin have Valeria (do you pronounce it like malaria or valler-ree-ah?)

Valentina is lovely

but tbh if it's only DH's cousin there's nothing stopping you both using it

Prefer Valentina, as Valeria sounds to me like Valerie and that seems so old fashioned.

I am Valerie and it is one of those oldfashioned names that has shown no signs of coming back. There were 4 in my primary school class-circa 1950.I dont mind Val but do not like Valerie.

I like Valentina, don't like Val - depends how much it means to you really as a substitute name won't be the same. How about using Valeria as a middle name?

We ahve got a Spanish vet called Valeria, whom my mother insists on calling valerian as her cat goes mad for the soporific teabags - which none of us will drink as they're so disgusting

We get phone calls from Valerian.

'ullo. Ees Valeeeria'. She is kind of doom laden. iygwim

Love both Valeria and Valentina! Both are beautiful, elegant girls names that aren't that popular/common.

Am less keen on Valerie or the nickname Val.

Hola you

well, you know my thoughts but just to reiterate...

Valerie - old lady name, sorry
Valeria - pretty but cuz has nicked it and tbh, it does sound a bit like valerian, had not thought of that before

Valentina - pretty, exotic, romantic, flashing dark eyes, tinkling laugh - beautiful, beautiful, beautiful

congrats again

Valerie is very cool

Valentina is nice but suggests a certain type of person, perhaps she will not fit that type of person?

I like Valerie, but Valeria sounds like Malaria to me.

Valerie is bridge-chic. You're ahead of the curve by about ten years, but it'll come back. It's a pretty sound.

I like Valentina too, but it's a bit long. You'd end up shortening it to Val or Tina, so, stick with Valerie.

I agree with Podrick by the way.

Can you be a Valentina if you have light brown hair and blue eyes and live in Bury St Edmonds..... NO. THere is nothing wrong with the above of course./

Oh, I love Valeria - it's the name of the heroine in Wilkie Collins's The Law and the Lady, about a woman who is determined to prove her husband is innocent of murder.

i like the name Valerie. Had a friend at school with this name and she was lovely.

However, nowadays it just makes me sing 'why dontcha come on over Valerie? Valer-ie-ie, Valerie' in the style of the Zutons!
