What do you think of Fiona?

I'd like to pick a Scottish name (being Scottish),and something about Fiona is appealing. Only problem is I know LOADS of Fionas around my age (32).

Any thoughts?

Yes it's definitely for a girl!! Ha ha I know what you mean...

I'm torn between whether it's quite a dated name or actually quite a nice name (and also not currently that popular so IMO good).

I do like Mhairi too (pronounced Vari) - also Isla but now quite popular.

Lovely. It's like Sarah - lots of them in their thirties but it's classic and not a name that should be consigned to history and never revived (like, say, Beryl).

She would really stand out amongst the hoards of Olivias and Mollys.

ds's best friend is fiona. don't know of another one who's under 30... but it suits her really well, is unique at their school, not too frilly.

mmm, I hate it, but that's not the name in itself - I just know a hideous toad of a Fiona and it puts me off. What about Felicity or Felicia instead?

PLEASE don't do the Ffionn/Fyona thing!!!! Totally pretentious. When I was growing up (slightly older than you), Fiona was really common, but it's dropping in popularity - which I would say would be good, as she won't be one of dozens of Islas, Katies etc. Also, if she travels, especially to places with Scots settlers, she will get a lot of positive comments - happened to me in Nova Scotia
