I like Theodore a lot; it's unusual but not odd, has gravitas as a grown-up name, but lends itself well to the sweet nickname of 'Teddy'.

It does always make me think of Roosevelt, tho.

I love Theo. You could always put Theodore on the birth cert and call him Theo day to day.

Tbh, with a large name like Theodore you may find yourself shortening it anyway

But go for Theo, 'tis fab.

I love Theo and Theodore but DH says if we went for the latter we'd have to have Alvin and Simon too and now I can't get chipmunk associations out of my head. So I might have to stick with just Theo for (as yet theoretical!) DS3

We have a lovely Theo, so I'm biased. We spell it the contiental way - Theodor - as we are in DK, and in danish it is pronounced Teeo.

We have a Theodore, shortened to Theo for every day use. We used the full Theodore for him in case he wants to win a Nobel Prize or something. Quite a few of our US friends refer to him as Teddy too, which I like. So a big thumbs up from me, but be aware Theo is getting more popular due to Theo Walcott.

I love it as Theo is my ds' name - was very upset that on a school concert programme they'd put him as Theobald presuming that was his correct name...wouldn't have minded Theodore as much. A French friend on Facebook spelled it with an accent which looked and sounded very chic !

We have one - he's christened Theodore, but is usually Theo for everyday use, so obviously I'm a fan!

When we chose it there were very few and lots of people commented how unusual it was - but I think it's definitely becoming more 'common'.

We have a Theo but for some reason it never occurred to us to have him as a Theodore and it shortened to Theo. I do like Theodore though too.

at school choosing Theobald, maryann! How hilarious - I wonder if there are any Theobalds nowadays? Actually, we quite often call ds1 Theophilus as a nickname - after Theophilus P. Wildebeest, the Lenny Henry character. Another reason for us using the full Theodore was the meaning - it sort of translates as "a gift from God" which I like a lot (although I may like it less when ds1 is a teenager and thinks he's god's gift...).

wilbur ! I never thought to give ds the full name, just loved Theo - I remember the son in the Cosby Show was called that and it sounded good to me - short and neat and it can be either street or slightly upmarket,whatever you like really !

And if you take him to Greece on holiday, all the locals, taverna staff etc will fuss over him madly becasue he has a Greek name. We almost didn't get ds1 back from the head waiter when we went to a hotel in Crete.

yes,that';s true - someone at school calls him 'Theo Paphitis' !... ds also has a half Greek cousin who has an English name, which is a bit disappointing.

What a cute name. It brings back very happy (and very distant ) memories of a rabbit on a tv programme back in the 1960's. Think he was a puppet, but I loved him

Thank you for your messages. We prefer Ted to Theo but I think we finally found a name we can agree on.

I am not sure it goes with my other kids names but we really like it and it goes with our surname.
