A family name on my DH's side - in case our LO turns out to be a boy - is this name terrible?? The Algernon in DHs family was always known as Algie.

I can already see the child getting called algae, but, come on - let me have it?????

Algie seems on a par with Archie and Alfie - why not? But make sure the middle name is something a bit plainer perhaps in case Algernon doesn't suit him when he's older.

Cecily. You must not laugh at me, darling, but it had always been a girlish dream of mine to love some one whose name was Ernest. [Algernon rises, Cecily also.] There is something in that name that seems to inspire absolute confidence. I pity any poor married woman whose husband is not called Ernest.

Algernon. But, my dear child, do you mean to say you could not love me if I had some other name?

Cecily. But what name?

Algernon. Oh, any name you like - Algernon - for instance...

Cecily. But I don?t like the name of Algernon.

Algernon. Well, my own dear, sweet, loving little darling, I really can?t see why you should object to the name of Algernon. It is not at all a bad name. In fact, it is rather an aristocratic name. Half of the chaps who get into the Bankruptcy Court are called Algernon. But seriously, Cecily... [Moving to her]... if my name was Algy, couldn?t you love me?

Cecily. [Rising.] I might respect you, Ernest, I might admire your character, but I fear that I should not be able to give you my undivided attention.

I think it's lovely in theory and Algie is sweet in a not-overused-like-Archie-and-Alfie kind of way. I'm just not sure that personally I'd be brave enough to go with it. It depends on the surname too I think.

Wow, better response than I was expecting - I am thinking about names SO much I actually think I have lost perspective - I have the most dull surname ever - Johnson - so I am hoping this means that I might be able to pull it off!

Algernon to me feels like a fantasy-mmovie character name....lol....not keen, and tbh Algie makes it worse....if your child is called Algernon, well....don't go call him Algie, lol....

The name algernon always makes me laugh. Its in a Just William story, where he invents a sickly sweet alter ego and when pressed for the name of his twin comes up with Walgernon!! It had me in stitches.

Personally im not keen, but then whats it got to do with me - im thinking about using Wulfric, so what do i know!

Not just odd - bloody awful.

It's a joke name for Lord Snooty types in the Beano

Mmmm I'm not so sure about with Johnson tbh as they both end similarly (although as the stress is different you could get away with it).

Flowers for Algernon is a great story with an incredibly sad ending.

As for Algernon as a name - I think you should go onto the 'why do some kids get beaten up?' thread. Think about it...thiiiink about it...!

SAEJ · 03/01/2009 16:09

If it helps you to imagine it - he will probably be that Lord Snooty character anyway - my current alternative is Wilbur?

Algernon MUCH better than Wilbur imho!

WHO said that??

Both are very very nice.
You may have either.

YES!

(if your ds is likely to attend Eton or Marlborough or somewhere esle where boys are routinely called Rupert or Rollo)

NO!

(if your ds will be at a comp with boys called Ryan and Morgan - he will probably be picked on mercilessly for it. I spaek as a sec teacher BTW)

Report
SAEJ · 03/01/2009 16:17

We fall into the Rupert/Rollo camp.

Algernon was the joke name we had for DS1 as a bump-I wouldn't use it as a serious name!
