Marisa or Rose?

DH and I are delighted to be having another girl, but third time around are stuck for another name we both agree on.

He like Annabelle/Evie which I think are nice but so popular right now. I like Cicely, Francesca and Romilly which he hates (sob)

The only names we both like are Marisa and Rose, nn Rosie. In relation to Marisa, we aren't Italian - Danish/scottish combo! And Is Rose a bit girlie?

Opinions welcome!!

Is Marisa pronounced Ma-riss-a or Ma-ree-sa?

Whichever pronunciation, I prefer it to tired old Rose.

Marisa is the Italian spelling and it's pronounced "mareeesa"

I'm not sure anyone than an Italian could carry that off so it would be "maarisa" for pronunciation.

I prefer Mar-eesa to Maarisa. I def think you could carry off Mar-eesa. Don't like Maar-isa at all!

I like Maricela better than Marisa. The Marisa I know is 1/2 Spanish, btw, same pronunciation, gets along fine in England with that pronunciation. nn's for Maricela (Mar-ee-SELL-uh) are Cel, Mary, Marie, etc.

I'd go for Rosemary rather than Rose by itself, and keep the nn Rosie.

But would Marisa pronounced "mareeesa" by me, a rather ordinary Scot, not sound unbelievably pretentious?! Grin

My Australian SIL is Marisa (Mar-EE-sa). Doesn't feel pretentious or OT on her. Beautiful name.

why would it be pretentious?
But keep in mind others will apply all sorts of pronunciations which your Dd may even prefer or at least not be bothered by. Pick a name that you don't mind any of the obvious Nicknames or variations in how to say it.

My cousin is called marisa pronounced mareesa, never thought anything of it. She's not Italian at all,

I wouldn't think Marisa pronounced Mar-ee-sa pretentious. In fact had we not had this chat I would presume it was said that way just as Lisa would be Lee-sa or Anita would be An-ee-ta. I would never think that Marisa was Mar-iss-a or Maris-a.
Marisa is lovely, and I think it could be even lovely in a Scottish accent!

I know a couple of people called Marissa, which is pronounced with a short 'i'. And a couple of Marisas, pronounced the long-I Italian way.

I think Marisa would be a bit unusual on someone with no Italian heritage or surname, yes. The Marisas I know have surnames like Biancuzza. I guess it's a bit like Luisa rather than Louisa.

All that said, I way prefer Rosie. (Or Rose.)

Rose is lovely, and like Grace, is often used as a throw-away middle name.

Such a pity, as it's too pretty to languish as a middle name, only heard at christenings and weddings!

Marisa Tomei is always pronounced Mar-i-sa, not Mar-ee-sa. That is what I would say and what I think most people would say, tbh. It is a lovely name!
