Middle names

Why did you choose the middle names you chose?

Just looking for inspiration as a bit stuck for a middle name (we don't really want to use a family name, and we definitely do want a middle name ).

I had three possible girls names for dd and when she was born she got my favourite and my secnd favourite as her first and middle names. Simple.

My dd has two middle names which belonged to dearly departed family members.

My ds's first middle name is one I have always loved but dh wasn't too keen on it as a first name. My ds then has his late grandfather's name as a second middle name.

How about using your middle name as a middle name which then means its passed onto the next generation.

Firstborn has same middle name as I do, 2nd has his fathers christian name, 3rd child has my grandmothers first name, and the youngest had my grandfathers christian which we chose as it was also exh grandfathers middle name. The oldest 2 like theirs, no3 HATES it but understands the sentiment and no4 uses it at work as there was someone else with same first name

I wanted a really unusual name. DH wanted to use his grandad's name which although I agreed with the sentiment, I really dislike the name. So we picked a first name we agreed on and used the other two as middle names.

I always think of middle names as an alternative to a first name, should DC turn out not to like their first name or not be able to use it for whatever reason.

So I always try to give a middle name which is very different to the first name, to maximise options. So, e.g. a long, traditional middle name if the first name is short / trendy. One with lots of nicknames is good too, for the same reason.

Lots of people in my family are known by their second / third names (or a diminutive thereof) so that is probably why I always think along those lines....

We were going to honour grandmothers but dh hated my dgm's name and I didn't like his! It is a case of using both or neither and using both sounded hideous. I got suggestions on here of an alternative, which dh happened to love anyway so we're going for it. Despite the fact I'm breaking my no biblical names rule and nothing in the top 20 rule it's a syllable from dgm's name so it's close enough for me and he didn't get the connection!

It was also suggested that a one syllable middle name sounds good with a 3 syllable first name and I agree with that now.
