you could consider mairaed (muh-rayd) as an alternative?

Scots Gaelic way of saying Mairead is not Muh-rayd but more like My-ur-edt. The final syllable is quite soft. The same sound occurs in Erraid. You can hear it here: www.forvo.com/word/mairead/

Erraid is a famous little island off the coast of Mull en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erraid
Lovely photos of it here: gerryco23.wordpress.com/2012/09/07/walking-on-mull-crossing-the-sands-to-erraid/

Erraid features in one of the most famous of all Scottish novels - 'Kidnapped' by Robert Louis Stevenson. I read it when young and re-read it not that long ago. It really is a ripping yarn. And I have visited the south of Mull - the larger island nearby. The scenery there is unforgettable!

Forvo.com is a fascinating website - it has pronounciations of all sorts of names by local speakers - all volunteers, so far as I know. I think it could be really helpful for people thinking about less usual baby names.
