AIBU to panic now? We NEED a name - Any help appreciated!

So far it has taken us 7 months and we are yet to agree on any names for our baby boy...

I have just been informed that due to a condition I have been diagnosed with I need to be induced early which leaves us with 2 weeks to come up with a moniker for the child but my husband likes quite "out there" names (Tiberius or Osiris anyone?) and I know he's a parent too, but frankly as I am the one who will be shouting the name across a playpark etc while he is at work I refuse to entertain the idea.

So please, hit me with your best boy names and ones to avoid!

I think it's better to wait than panic or rush into a name you do t like. You have six weeks after the birth to register.

YABU to 'panic', you have 6 weeks after the birth to register the name.
You could make up a list of possibles and wait until you meet your baby and see what they look like to see what fits.

It depends on which genre you like really, go through the baby names topic as there are lists & lists of them.

You have classic names: Edward, John, Charles

Names that are having a revival: Archie, Alfie, Leo

Baby name top 100 lists: Jack, Harry, Oliver

Names chosen to reflect a culture or heritage

Religious names

Why not agree to the Tiberius, Osiris etc as a middle name & go for a name you like as a forename? Give us an idea of some names that you like to narrow the field...

So you need less common boy names then? How about:-

Alexander (nn Xander)
Raphael
Blake
Inigo
Troy
Rex
Joel
Lucas
Tobias (nn Toby)
Jared
Lysander
Cyrus

Any take your fancy or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I know a little boy called Roman, which I think is quite unusual but not ridiculous!

Jonah.

Henry, Barnaby (Barney), Jonah, Luca, Albert, Xander, Seth, Otto, Emile.

Some of my personal favourite boys names anyway. I went to school with a Walter and he was mocked tirelessly for his name but since I've got into the TV series 'Fringe' it's grown on me.

One of ds1's mates is Roman, shortened to Roma.

I really like it along with Atticus.

Be warned, OP, he can be at the Registrar's desk before you can!

Leo is nice.

Can you compromise with Tiberius or Osiris and "normalise" them a bit to Tobias or Oscar? Or, what about using your DH's choice as a second name? Giving them your DH's choice but using a diminutive from day 1? Using his second name as his common name? There are lots of options.

My brother (who turns 52 this year) has been known as the diminutive of his second name since he was born. The vast majority of people don't even know his given name is James. My FiL is also known by his second name... actually not that uncommon for boys, so was my first boyfriend.

To be honest, I don't hate Tiberius, but Osiris I can't help but think of Icarus. For diminutives of both names, you could use Toby or Ozzie.

Since you didn't offer any options of your own, I just tried to make the best of your DH's preferences.

With us, our DCs have "classic" names. There is a reason behind all of DS's names (he has 3 - his great grandfather, my uncle who died in a fire when he was 16, and the friend who introduced his father and I but passed from a heart condition when he was in his early 30s) and a preference for DD's first name, but memorial for her second (no third for her).

While they are uncommon names based on current trends - they will not show up in the top 100 - they have names we are happy with.

I wish you all the best with your name search, labour and delivery.

What I recommend is that you and DH come up with a middle name, and a short list of 3 or 4 first names. Once your DS is safely in your arms, you should be able to agree on one from that list. He doesn't have to be formally named before he actually arrives - despite what you feel pressured in to.

Un-Mumsnetty hugs coming your way... I have been in your shoes. Changes of plans at this point are earth shaking.

Wishes for an easy labour and arrival are coming your way

Andrew my bother's wife's first husband did this to her, when she was still laid up in hospital. She wanted to call the baby something out there and he picked a really traditional name, though, with the unusual name as the child's middle name.

I have seen it mentioned twice now, but DS's best friend's name is Roman.

Lots of great options here...

Roman is nice - it's my cousin's name (he's Polish) Mind you his other name is James and he's known as Jim Grin

Biblical is always safe - Thaddeus and Jude are maybe a bit more out there.

Names are so hard but you will find one that suits. My DS was going to be Finlay rght up to the moment he was born, but when he came out he was so obviously a Richard we went with that Grin

You always have the 6 weeks to think about before you need to get them registered.

So you could call them Sausage or something til you think of something.

I actually quite like Roman!

Other names I like are

Lucas
Mason
Henry
Ethan
Edison (but felt violent when OH said he would be known as Eddie)
Matthew
Seth
Logan
Quinn
Peter (but not keen on Pete!)
