If you had a Samuel (goes by Sam/Sammy), would you consider the name Delilah for a girl? We aren't religious one tiny bit, and I am not sure the average person would make a connection, and even though the biblical story is about Samson and Delilah, I'm still worried people might be all WTF at us.

In any case, I'd also love other girl name suggestions. I like 3+ syllable names, with nickname options. Middle names are Janine Eleanor.

Baby is due in 6 weeks! I don't even know if it is a girl, but I've got my boy name chosen already. I'm just having trouble with a girl name.

It's fine! Dd's name is not Samson. Tallulah, Delores, Damaris, Aquinnah, Sidonie, Rosalina, Bianca, Jacinta, Ramona...

I think it's fine. How about:

Matilda
Elizabeth
Saffron
Madeline
Romilly
Josephine
Magdalena
Annalise
Genevieve
Lavinia

Jemima, Tallulah, Talitha, Magdalena are all in a similar vein but I totally think you could use Delilah. It's a great name.

I think it's fine! I wouldn't have thought Samson and Delilah.

YY to Madeline, Elizabeth, I prefer Rosilind over Rosalina, or Melissa.

People can make the most tenuous links though no matter what, my best friends new baby twins are called Sam and Ella and I can't stop hearing Salmonella whenever she says their names, just don't tell her thatGrin

I also think names sound together good. I would not have thought about any connection to the story of Samson and Delilah!

Well, I don't think I'd go for Delilah in the first place, years of people singing 'why why why at her'.

I think I would have made the link. The story is well known enough for people to go 'Sam and Delilah? Hang on, that sounds familiar... Oh.'

And given the relationship between the Biblical duo I just would want to go there.

Daphnie?

Sam(son) and Deliliah were lovers so I definitely wouldn't use it.

No. Just no.

I did think of the connection - not great. And I reckon I'd get sick of hearing 'why, why, why' too... Daphnie sounds good though.

I'm not really a fan of long names, but the ones I do like are:

Marguerite (Maggie)
Marigold (Mari or Goldie)
Marianne (Marie, Annie)
Helena (Lena)

My friend has a lovely DD named Delilah - no one will remember the Tom Jones song when she is at school. And surely adults wouldn't be so rude to sing it to a child?

I have a song about my name and it's usually over within seconds when people think they are being hilarious and sing the chorus. Although I have a FoF named Jolene who I was DESPERATE to sing Dolly Parton at when I first met her!

I don't think it clashes with Samuel at all.

I'd be Shock if I met a brother and sister with those names.

And that song isn't going anywhere, it's firmly embedded in popular culture at this stage.

I absolutely would have thought "Sam and Delilah? Siblings? Ew!" Given the relationship in the story I really wouldn't risk it...

Also love Talulah and Tabitha in the same vein. Davina if you like the 'd'?

What's so bad about people singing " "why, why, why Delilah " anyway?

We know a little Delilah nn Lilah.

Don't refer to them as Sam and Delilah - refer to them as Delilah and Sam?

I love Delilah. Also Ophelia, Juliet, Liliana, Cecilia, Caterina?

There's nothing wrong with one or two people singing it, but I'd imagine when it gets to the 10,000th time it could be a bit wearing.

Cardiff on a rugby international day would be testing!

Am amazed at so many saying they wouldn't make the link. It's like having Bonnie and Clyde.

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/07/2014 21:03

No.

And I can't get over the Tom Jones song of the same name. Sung at every event a Welsh team play since it was released.

And that awful "Hey there Deliah" song from around 2009

Would you consider Miriam? Or Deborah, Naomi, Phoebe, Tamar?

Superrhan · 23/07/2014 09:20

I'm a 23 year old with Catholic upbringing.

I didn't make either the Tom Jones song or biblical link until pointed out, so I can't imagine children 20 years plus my junior will make the link.

Plus your DS isn't Samson, and Sammy and Delilah sound lovely together :)

If you like it - go for it!

Report
squoosh · 23/07/2014 10:22

Um, most people will definitely make the link.

Honestly.
